attracted to <strong>Christian</strong>ity when it is presented to <strong>the</strong>m<br />

at <strong>the</strong> critical period.<br />

At <strong>the</strong> present time, however, <strong>the</strong>re are forces <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>country</strong>, grow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> potency, which make for <strong>the</strong><br />

dis<strong>in</strong>tegration of caste. Chief among <strong>the</strong>se is <strong>the</strong> new<br />

economical situation. More and more, persons are driven<br />

by <strong>the</strong> stress of modern life to seek for occupations out-<br />

side <strong>the</strong> traditional l<strong>in</strong>es of caste. When this process has<br />

gone far enough, with <strong>the</strong> result<strong>in</strong>g mixture of men of<br />

all castes <strong>in</strong> one occupation, <strong>the</strong> probability is that <strong>the</strong><br />

caste system, which rests, more than on anyth<strong>in</strong>g else, on<br />

community of occupation, will dissolve away.<br />

Madigas to us lies <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> fact that it is from <strong>the</strong>se two<br />

classes that <strong>the</strong> vast bulk of <strong>Telugu</strong> <strong>Christian</strong>s are<br />

derived. To give an idea of <strong>the</strong>ir numbers, we may draw<br />

on <strong>the</strong> figures provided by <strong>the</strong> census of 1901. The<br />

total population of <strong>the</strong> Cuddapah and Kurnool districts,<br />

with<strong>in</strong> which our work wholly lies, was ra<strong>the</strong>r over two<br />

millions. Of <strong>the</strong>se, 142,000 were Malas, and 137,000 were
