The Dornakal Mission was, as we have already Domakal<br />

mentioned, started and worked entirely by Indian<br />

<strong>Christian</strong>s. The Indian Church has given more than<br />

one proof that it wiU. take up <strong>the</strong> task of evangelis<strong>in</strong>g<br />

India on its own account, apart from European direction,<br />

of which this is one. The full title of <strong>the</strong> society<br />

which carries on <strong>the</strong> Dornakal Mission is <strong>the</strong> Indian<br />

Missionary Society of T<strong>in</strong>nevelly. This society consists<br />

of members of <strong>the</strong> Anglican Church <strong>in</strong> T<strong>in</strong>nevelly who<br />

have banded <strong>the</strong>mselves toge<strong>the</strong>r for this special<br />

work. It orig<strong>in</strong>ated <strong>in</strong> a meet<strong>in</strong>g held at Palamcotta,<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> T<strong>in</strong>nevelly district, <strong>in</strong> July 1903.<br />

Before <strong>the</strong> end<br />

of <strong>the</strong> year two offers of service had been received.<br />

As <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>tention of <strong>the</strong> society was not merely to evan-<br />

gelise those with<strong>in</strong> its own borders, but to send its<br />

preachers to what might properly be called a foreign<br />

<strong>country</strong>, <strong>the</strong> first missionary, who represented a Tamil<br />

branch of <strong>the</strong> Church, was sent <strong>in</strong> 1904 to a part<br />

of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Telugu</strong> <strong>country</strong> six hundred miles away. The<br />

spot selected was Dornakal, on <strong>the</strong> railway between<br />

Bezwada and Hyderabad, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Manukota Taluq<br />

of <strong>the</strong> Hyderabad State. Before proceed<strong>in</strong>g to his<br />

station, <strong>the</strong> missionary had to spend a Uttle time at<br />

<strong>the</strong> C.M.S. station of Khammamett, <strong>in</strong> order to<br />

learn <strong>Telugu</strong>. By 1906 <strong>the</strong> staff had grown to three<br />

missionaries and four local workers. In that year<br />

<strong>the</strong> Bishop of Madras, who visited <strong>the</strong> place and<br />
