THE S.P.G. MISSION—EARLY PERIOD<br />

Before referr<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> history of <strong>the</strong> S.P.G. <strong>Telugu</strong> Beg<strong>in</strong>-<br />

Mission, it is necessary to take a brief glance at <strong>the</strong> first JJJj^ffon.<br />

recorded attempt at <strong>Christian</strong> work of any k<strong>in</strong>d among ary work,<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>Telugu</strong> people of <strong>the</strong> Ceded Districts. Early <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

n<strong>in</strong>eteenth century a Eurasian named WiUiam Howell,<br />

a surveyor of <strong>the</strong> Department of Public Works, was<br />

stationed at Cuddapah. This good man spent his leisure<br />

<strong>in</strong> evangelis<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> people about him. In course of time<br />

he had ga<strong>the</strong>red a small congregation <strong>in</strong> Cuddapah town.<br />

At <strong>the</strong> same period <strong>the</strong> London Missionary Society were<br />

propos<strong>in</strong>g to open a Mission among <strong>the</strong> <strong>Telugu</strong> people.<br />

In 1823, <strong>the</strong>refore, <strong>the</strong>y took over this congregation and<br />

appo<strong>in</strong>ted Mr. HoweU to be <strong>the</strong>ir resident missionary<br />

<strong>in</strong> that town, and two years later he was made a regular<br />

m<strong>in</strong>ister of <strong>the</strong> congregation. By 1842 <strong>the</strong>re were<br />

(besides Tamils from o<strong>the</strong>r parts) nearly one hundred<br />

<strong>Telugu</strong> <strong>Christian</strong>s <strong>in</strong> Cuddapah. About this time <strong>the</strong>re<br />

were several L.M.S. m<strong>in</strong>isters who desired to connect<br />

<strong>the</strong>mselves with <strong>the</strong> Church of England, of whom <strong>the</strong><br />

best known was Dr. CaldweU, an em<strong>in</strong>ent l<strong>in</strong>guist, who<br />

afterwards became Bishop <strong>in</strong> T<strong>in</strong>nevelly. Mr. Howell<br />
