132 MISSIONS IN THE TELUGU COUNTRY<br />

members was different from ours, <strong>the</strong> ch<strong>in</strong> be<strong>in</strong>g<br />

placed, and <strong>the</strong> bow be<strong>in</strong>g held <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> middle <strong>in</strong>stead<br />

of at one end. The music played was entirely Indian,<br />

as were also <strong>the</strong> lyrics sung to this accompaniment.<br />

Later <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> history of <strong>the</strong> Band ano<strong>the</strong>r attraction<br />

was added by <strong>the</strong> gift of a magic-lantern. Pictures<br />

both sacred and secular, thrown on a portable screen,<br />

attracted great crowds.<br />

Special attention was paid to preach<strong>in</strong>g. The<br />

subjects to be dealt with by every member were<br />

carefully arranged. The form of <strong>the</strong> addresses became<br />

well known to those who heard <strong>the</strong>m often, and stamped<br />

itself on <strong>the</strong> memory. Some time after <strong>the</strong> Band had<br />

ceased to tour, <strong>the</strong> writer, when arrang<strong>in</strong>g a preach<strong>in</strong>g<br />

tour for members of <strong>the</strong> Church of England Mens<br />

Society, found that with one accord <strong>the</strong>y took up <strong>the</strong><br />

subjects, and adopted as much as possible <strong>the</strong> style, of<br />

<strong>the</strong> addresses which <strong>the</strong>y had heard from <strong>the</strong> Band.<br />

It was <strong>in</strong>tended that <strong>the</strong> Band should tour somewhat<br />

widely. The rule was that it should visit each of <strong>the</strong> five<br />

districts of <strong>the</strong> Mission once dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> year ; that it<br />

should rema<strong>in</strong> on tour an average of twenty days each<br />

month ; that it should, if possible, preach <strong>the</strong> Gospel<br />

<strong>in</strong> every village and hamlet <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> district, and that while<br />

<strong>in</strong> a district it should generally be jo<strong>in</strong>ed by <strong>the</strong> agents<br />

belong<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> part <strong>in</strong> which it was, so far as <strong>the</strong> mis-<br />

sionary could spare <strong>the</strong>m. As a matter of fact, this<br />

last regulation so swelled its numbers that sometimes<br />

three preach<strong>in</strong>g bands went out simultaneously to<br />

different villages. The records show that <strong>the</strong> rule of<br />

cover<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> ground of <strong>the</strong> whole Mission <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> year
