football are, however, regularly played, and hockey<br />
occasionally. The masters of <strong>the</strong> school play tennis.<br />
There is an open-air gymnasium where <strong>the</strong> bo5''s are<br />
tra<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> English fashion.<br />
Food. It need hardly be said that <strong>in</strong> all our schools <strong>the</strong><br />
Dormitories.<br />
arrangements for feed<strong>in</strong>g and sleep<strong>in</strong>g are of a simple<br />
k<strong>in</strong>d. At Nandyal <strong>the</strong> food is served out <strong>in</strong> a room<br />
with a smooth stone floor, and <strong>the</strong> boys sit <strong>in</strong> Hues on <strong>the</strong><br />
floor. Every boy has before him a plate and a mug,<br />
and <strong>the</strong> food is served on to each plate. On most days<br />
<strong>the</strong> food consists of a k<strong>in</strong>d of pudd<strong>in</strong>g made of two k<strong>in</strong>ds<br />
of millet, ragi and cholam. On festivals and o<strong>the</strong>r fixed<br />
days it is varied with rice and meat. The quantity is<br />
regulated accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> boy's requirements. This<br />
food is equal to <strong>the</strong> best that <strong>the</strong> boys would get at home,<br />
but is of <strong>the</strong> same k<strong>in</strong>d. It is given without st<strong>in</strong>t, and<br />
<strong>the</strong>refore <strong>the</strong> boys' development is as good as possible.<br />
After <strong>the</strong> meal <strong>the</strong> boys do <strong>the</strong>ir own wash<strong>in</strong>g up. The<br />
sleep<strong>in</strong>g arrangements are equally simple. There are<br />
large dormitories with stone floors. Every boy has a<br />
sleep<strong>in</strong>g mat to be spread <strong>in</strong> his own place, and a cloth<br />
with which to cover liimself. A lantern kept burn<strong>in</strong>g<br />
all night lessens <strong>the</strong> fear of <strong>in</strong>truders <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> shape of<br />
<strong>Christian</strong><br />
snakes and scorpions.<br />
The Mission has always been most careful to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><br />
Teachers.<br />
^^^ <strong>in</strong>tention with which <strong>the</strong> Nandyal College was<br />
founded—that it should be a tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>stitution for<br />
<strong>Christian</strong> teachers. Therefore, although non-<strong>Christian</strong>s<br />
are admitted to <strong>the</strong> high school, <strong>the</strong>ir numbers are<br />
limited <strong>in</strong> such a degree as to prevent <strong>the</strong> <strong>Christian</strong>
