THE S.P.G. MISSION—EARLY PERIOD 57<br />

<strong>the</strong>y had to swim across <strong>the</strong> Koondair, which at that<br />

time was quite full, and entreated me to accompany<br />

<strong>the</strong>m ; but as I had o<strong>the</strong>r press<strong>in</strong>g engagements on hand I<br />

could not gratify <strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong>n. I told <strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong>y must wait<br />

till I was at liberty, and added : " The river is flow<strong>in</strong>g<br />

from bank to bank, how can I cross it now with my tent<br />

and o<strong>the</strong>r th<strong>in</strong>gs ? " " Pray don't let <strong>the</strong> river prevent<br />

you, Sir," was <strong>the</strong>ir reply. " We will construct rafts for<br />

you by ty<strong>in</strong>g large ear<strong>the</strong>nware vessels toge<strong>the</strong>r and<br />

fasten<strong>in</strong>g cots over <strong>the</strong>m, and on <strong>the</strong>se we will cross<br />

you over safely." Gladly would I have entrusted<br />

myself across <strong>the</strong> river to <strong>the</strong>se earnest and simplem<strong>in</strong>ded<br />

men, but urgent bus<strong>in</strong>ess required my<br />

presence at Cuddapah at that time. To <strong>the</strong>m nei<strong>the</strong>r<br />

ra<strong>in</strong> nor river was any obstacle, for <strong>the</strong>y came fre-<br />

quently to Mutyalapad, anxious to know when I would<br />

visit <strong>the</strong>m. About <strong>the</strong> middle of October I sent one<br />

of my native catechists to <strong>in</strong>quire particularly <strong>in</strong>to<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir character and condition. He brought back a<br />

very favourable report of <strong>the</strong>m, and on <strong>the</strong> even<strong>in</strong>g of<br />

October 29 I set out, accompanied by Mr. Higg<strong>in</strong>s, for<br />

Bodamanur.<br />

• At dusk we approached <strong>the</strong> banks of <strong>the</strong> Koondair,<br />

and, as <strong>the</strong> shades of even<strong>in</strong>g were ga<strong>the</strong>r<strong>in</strong>g round us,<br />

<strong>the</strong> scene was s<strong>in</strong>gularly beautiful : <strong>the</strong> broad, but at<br />

this time shallow, river, with its high, precipitous banks,<br />

<strong>the</strong> dark outl<strong>in</strong>es appear<strong>in</strong>g like ru<strong>in</strong>ed ramparts, and<br />

l<strong>in</strong>ed with houses almost overhang<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> stream ; <strong>the</strong><br />

little crowd of people on this side <strong>the</strong> river, who had<br />

collected toge<strong>the</strong>r to see us cross*; <strong>the</strong> cry of joy and<br />

welcome from our Bodamanur people who came thus far
