half of his people, and <strong>the</strong>n he proposed aga<strong>in</strong> to place<br />

himself under me. But 1 had seen much of <strong>the</strong> unsatis-<br />

factory state of th<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> a village where half <strong>the</strong> people<br />

were under me, and <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r half, be<strong>in</strong>g hea<strong>the</strong>n, beyond<br />

my jurisdiction, so my decision still was to wait. More<br />

time elapsed, and <strong>the</strong>n all were of one m<strong>in</strong>d except just<br />

two or three families ;—one of <strong>the</strong>se owned <strong>the</strong> very spot<br />

of ground which I had long ago marked out as <strong>the</strong> site<br />

of <strong>the</strong> future prayer-house.<br />

' I rode over one even<strong>in</strong>g to f<strong>in</strong>d out for myself <strong>the</strong><br />

disposition of <strong>the</strong> people. I had sent notice of my<br />

com<strong>in</strong>g and requested all to be present, but when I<br />

reached <strong>the</strong> village was disappo<strong>in</strong>ted to f<strong>in</strong>d but very<br />

few <strong>the</strong>re ;<br />

<strong>the</strong> women ei<strong>the</strong>r hid <strong>the</strong>mselves or stood at<br />

<strong>the</strong> doors of <strong>the</strong>ir houses quite unconcerned and careless,<br />

and some of <strong>the</strong> men, after a short stare, resumed <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

several occupations as if <strong>the</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess on which I came<br />

was noth<strong>in</strong>g connected with <strong>the</strong>mselves. I did not<br />

dismount from my horse, but sat for a few m<strong>in</strong>utes<br />

regard<strong>in</strong>g all attentively ; <strong>the</strong>n, conv<strong>in</strong>ced that <strong>the</strong><br />

pear was not yet ripe, turned my re<strong>in</strong> and rode away<br />

quietly. A proceed<strong>in</strong>g so different from all that <strong>the</strong>y<br />

had expected first astonished and <strong>the</strong>n alarmed <strong>the</strong><br />

villagers. I heard confused shouts beh<strong>in</strong>d me, <strong>the</strong><br />

cries of <strong>the</strong> children, "He is go<strong>in</strong>g away," and calls<br />

to me to return, of which I took no heed. A number of<br />

<strong>the</strong>m, however, ran after and soon overtook me, to whom<br />

I expla<strong>in</strong>ed that <strong>the</strong>ir reception of me was so different<br />

from what I had been accustomed to, that I doubted if<br />

<strong>the</strong>y really wished to have me for <strong>the</strong>ir priest and<br />
