MISSIONS IN THE TELUGU COUNTRY<br />
better than o<strong>the</strong>rs. In some cases, probably, <strong>the</strong> higher<br />
rank was due to <strong>the</strong> caste occupation appear<strong>in</strong>g cleaner<br />
than <strong>in</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs. Thus <strong>the</strong> shepherd stands high, while<br />
<strong>the</strong> fisherman, who takes life, is ranked low. But <strong>in</strong><br />
o<strong>the</strong>r cases it is difficult to see any reason <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> nature of<br />
th<strong>in</strong>gs why some should be high and o<strong>the</strong>rs low. It<br />
does not appear on <strong>the</strong> surface why <strong>the</strong> potter should<br />
be high <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> list, and <strong>the</strong> tank-digger very low. But<br />
as <strong>the</strong> higher castes are marked by <strong>the</strong> superior use <strong>the</strong>y<br />
make of <strong>the</strong> services of <strong>the</strong> Brahmans, it is possible<br />
that at a critical period, when <strong>the</strong> Sudras were be<strong>in</strong>g<br />
admitted <strong>in</strong>to caste, <strong>the</strong>ir more or less complete sub-<br />
servience to <strong>the</strong> Brahmans determ<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong>ir rank<br />
<strong>the</strong>nceforth.<br />
The most important class of Sudras, from <strong>the</strong> Mission<br />
po<strong>in</strong>t of view, is <strong>the</strong> farmer class, and this for several<br />
reasons. They are important, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> first place, from<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir numbers and <strong>the</strong>ir character. They are by far <strong>the</strong><br />
most numerous class of Sudras, physically <strong>the</strong> most<br />
sturdy of <strong>the</strong>ir tribe, and not without <strong>the</strong> appearance of<br />
hav<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> mak<strong>in</strong>gs of a f<strong>in</strong>e race <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>m. Then, <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> next place, <strong>the</strong>y are socially <strong>in</strong>dependent, not<br />
carry<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong>ir occupation by <strong>the</strong> wiU of o<strong>the</strong>rs.<br />
Indeed, were <strong>the</strong>y to lead <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> direction of <strong>Christian</strong>ity,<br />
most of <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r elements of society would be likely to<br />
follow. Besides this, <strong>the</strong>ir relation to our <strong>Christian</strong>s<br />
makes <strong>the</strong>m important ; for, as is expla<strong>in</strong>ed above, <strong>in</strong><br />
most cases <strong>the</strong>y are <strong>the</strong> masters, our <strong>Christian</strong>s are <strong>the</strong><br />
servants. They are very ignorant of th<strong>in</strong>gs outside<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir own sphere. Few of <strong>the</strong>m are literate, but when<br />
<strong>the</strong>re is a school <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> village with a good master, even
