192 MISSIONS IN THE TELUGU COUNTRY<br />

Razu, a high caste convert, formerly <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> service of <strong>the</strong><br />

Government, who resigned his post <strong>in</strong> order to carry on<br />

mission work, and was afterwards orda<strong>in</strong>ed and laboured<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> district until 1893, when ill health compelled him<br />

to retire. A certa<strong>in</strong> amount of success was met with<br />

among <strong>the</strong> Kois, but <strong>the</strong>se converts proved unstable.<br />

They were not will<strong>in</strong>g that <strong>the</strong> Malas, who work for<br />

<strong>the</strong>m as servants as <strong>the</strong>y do elsewhere for <strong>the</strong> Sudras,<br />

should be admitted to <strong>the</strong> Church with <strong>the</strong>mselves,<br />

and <strong>the</strong>re were many defections among <strong>the</strong>m. The<br />

great bulk of <strong>the</strong> Church has here, as elsewhere, been<br />

built up out of <strong>the</strong> Malas. This side of <strong>the</strong> work has<br />

prospered, and <strong>the</strong>re are now over twelve hundred<br />

<strong>Christian</strong>s <strong>in</strong> all. The Rev. J. Ca<strong>in</strong> has worked here<br />

almost cont<strong>in</strong>uously s<strong>in</strong>ce 1874. Mrs. Ca<strong>in</strong> has raised<br />

up a new <strong>in</strong>dustry among <strong>the</strong> women and girls, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

form of lace-mak<strong>in</strong>g, which is famous throughout South<br />

India.<br />

Raghavapuram was first occupied as an <strong>in</strong>dependent<br />

mission-station <strong>in</strong> 1870. The beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> work <strong>in</strong><br />

this part has been described above, and <strong>the</strong> movement<br />

which started fifty years ago has been <strong>in</strong> flood ever s<strong>in</strong>ce.<br />

Even after <strong>the</strong> separation from <strong>the</strong> district of two o<strong>the</strong>rs<br />

<strong>the</strong>re still rema<strong>in</strong> over five thousand <strong>Christian</strong>s.<br />

Khammamett is <strong>the</strong> centre of <strong>the</strong> most lately formed<br />

district of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Telugu</strong> Mission. It was first occupied <strong>in</strong><br />

1888. For <strong>the</strong> greater part of <strong>the</strong> period that has<br />

elapsed s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong>re was steady growth without any<br />

remarkable <strong>in</strong>ga<strong>the</strong>r<strong>in</strong>gs. Of late years, however, <strong>the</strong><br />

number of accessions has largely <strong>in</strong>creased, and has<br />

stra<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong> resources of <strong>the</strong> Mission to <strong>the</strong> utmost.
