<strong>the</strong> present time some S.P.G. students are undergo<strong>in</strong>g<br />

medical tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>re. It is di£6cult, <strong>in</strong> so brief an<br />

account, to give a fair idea of what this hospital has been<br />

do<strong>in</strong>g. On <strong>the</strong> medical side it is widely and deservedly<br />

famous, and patients seek its aid from distances as<br />

great as two days' journey by rail. The number of <strong>in</strong>-<br />

patients <strong>in</strong> a year has reached nearly a thousand, and<br />

that of out-patients fourteen thousand. But far more<br />

is accomplished than <strong>the</strong>se figures suggest, for <strong>the</strong> true<br />

spirit of <strong>Christian</strong>ity is exhibited <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> care taken both<br />

of <strong>the</strong> souls and of <strong>the</strong> bodies of those who come with<strong>in</strong><br />

its walls.<br />

The next Mission that we <strong>in</strong>tend to speak of is that American<br />

of <strong>the</strong> American Baptist Foreign Missionary Society, f^^gt^*<br />

Their chief work is carried on <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>country</strong> ly<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> 1835.<br />

east of <strong>the</strong> S.P.G. Mission, but separated from it by <strong>the</strong><br />

high range of <strong>the</strong> Eastern Ghauts. It works, however,<br />

<strong>in</strong> some of <strong>the</strong> villages of our districts, and as its con-<br />

verts <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se villages are almost exclusively drawn<br />

from <strong>the</strong> Madigas, it sometimes happens that <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

same village will be found an S.P.G. congregation of<br />

Mala <strong>Christian</strong>s, and an American Baptist congregation<br />

of Madiga <strong>Christian</strong>s.<br />

The American Baptist Society began work <strong>in</strong> 1835<br />

with two missionaries. By 1844 <strong>the</strong>y had only eight<br />

Church members. For many years <strong>the</strong> Mission was<br />

s<strong>in</strong>gularly unsuccessful, and <strong>the</strong> field was repeatedly <strong>in</strong><br />

danger of be<strong>in</strong>g abandoned. A conversation which took<br />

place on one of <strong>the</strong>se occasions between Jewett, a
