was accepted as a missionary by <strong>the</strong> S.P.G. and soon<br />
afterwards was orda<strong>in</strong>ed and appo<strong>in</strong>ted to m<strong>in</strong>ister to<br />
<strong>the</strong> <strong>Telugu</strong> congregation at VuUavaram, near Madras.<br />
In 1856 he retired on a pension. He died <strong>in</strong> Madras<br />
about 1867.<br />
When Mr. Howell jo<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong> Church of England,<br />
forty-six members of his congregation were admitted<br />
with him. These were formed <strong>in</strong>to a congregation of <strong>the</strong><br />
Church of England by <strong>the</strong> Rev. W. W. Whitford. At<br />
Cuddapah that time <strong>the</strong>re was no chapla<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> Cuddapah, but <strong>the</strong><br />
English residents were visited from time to time by <strong>the</strong><br />
chapla<strong>in</strong> of Poonamallee. Mr. Whitford, who <strong>the</strong>n held<br />
that post, did what he could for his new congregation,<br />
and, act<strong>in</strong>g accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> ideas of <strong>the</strong> time, he gave<br />
<strong>the</strong>m land on which to build houses. He also provided<br />
<strong>the</strong>m with a catechist and a schoolmaster. Thus<br />
<strong>the</strong>y rema<strong>in</strong>ed for seven j'ears, dependent for <strong>the</strong><br />
adm<strong>in</strong>istration of <strong>the</strong> sacraments upon Mr. Whitford's<br />
occasional visits, and <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>tervals look<strong>in</strong>g for<br />
help and encouragement to <strong>the</strong>ir lay-teachers and<br />
to <strong>the</strong> European residents who took an <strong>in</strong>terest<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>m. Undoubtedly <strong>the</strong> chief <strong>in</strong>fluence upon<br />
<strong>the</strong>m dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>se years was that of two men<br />
of <strong>the</strong>ir own race, whose names, because <strong>the</strong>y are<br />
prom<strong>in</strong>ent <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> early history of <strong>the</strong> Mission, must be<br />
mentioned at once. These were two bro<strong>the</strong>rs, Tamils<br />
by birth, named Basil and Afred Wood, who had been<br />
received with Mr. HoweU <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> Church of England.<br />
They early showed <strong>the</strong> true pastoral spirit and, when<br />
Mr. Whitford f<strong>in</strong>ally left <strong>the</strong> <strong>country</strong>, although no funds<br />
were any longer available with which to carry on <strong>the</strong>
