further; but rather to learn more of the spiritual<br />

world <strong>and</strong> spiritual communion from the Christian<br />

mystics.<br />

Professor Richet, a Spiritist leader, referring to<br />

this question says: "I am not yet convinced."<br />

"Stainton Moses himself," says Myers, "believed<br />

the messages came from departed spir<strong>its</strong>, but there<br />

is great doubt whether they did."<br />

J. G. Raupert, in "The Supreme Problem," p. 117,<br />

says: "No advance has been made in establishing<br />

spirit identity in twenty-five years of study."<br />

Light, a Spiritist magazine, said (March i3th,<br />

1909): "The hardest thing to prove from the other<br />

side is identity; <strong>and</strong> we know of no test that can<br />

determine it."<br />

Professor Newbolt considers that, on account of<br />

inaccuracies <strong>and</strong> ignorance, it is doubtful that the<br />

communications are from the spir<strong>its</strong> of the dead.<br />

D. D. Home, in 1855, at Keighley, in Yorkshire,<br />

said (speaking of mediums): "The subconscious<br />

mentality accounts for much." Coming from the<br />

leading medium of his time this is<br />

Maeterlinck <strong>and</strong> Hodgson<br />

significant.<br />

The "Ear of Dionysius," a most complicated<br />

classical inferential message, deciphered by the Right<br />

Hon. Gerald Balfour, is not very satisfactory<br />

evidence of the work of a discarnate spirit, <strong>and</strong> was<br />

not accepted in Spiritist circles without great<br />

opposition.<br />
