The resultt, of course, was many stripes <strong>and</strong> the<br />

prison at Philippi; not f<strong>org</strong>etting the loosing of all<br />

the prisoners' chains, <strong>and</strong> the conversion of the<br />

jailer, <strong>and</strong> all his house, the first European men who<br />

were converted to the new faith.<br />

To continue our list. "But for. . .sorcerers. . .<br />

fire <strong>and</strong> brimstone, which is the second death."<br />

The Witch of Endor<br />

The episode of the witch of Endor must also be<br />

considered. It is recorded in i Sam. xxviii. that<br />

Samuel had been dead five years.<br />

The witch of Endor in a cave on the north side of<br />

Little Hermon, in the great plain of Esdraelon, was<br />

what would now be called a medium accustomed<br />

to necromancy, a practice not only forbidden by<br />

God, but also by Saul himself;* so that this woman<br />

was more or less in hiding.<br />

Saul came <strong>and</strong> asked for the materialisation of<br />

Samuel. At first the form was only seen by the<br />

medium; but when the great mantle it wore was<br />

described to Saul, he knew at once who it was, because<br />

he had seized this very robe years before <strong>and</strong><br />

torn it on that memorable day, when Samuel de-<br />
