Of course, the very forbidding of necromancy<br />

shows it existed; but does not prove it was successful.<br />

The ancient practice was essentially devilish, <strong>and</strong>,<br />

as we have seen, to be repressed at all costs. Not<br />

for nothing has the Christian Church throughout her<br />

history forbidden the practice of necromancy. Will<br />

any apologist deny it has a most unpleasant <strong>and</strong><br />

deterring record ?<br />

Borrowed Plumes<br />

Spiritism speaks deceptively at times in language<br />

borrowed from Christianity: "The gr<strong>and</strong> figure of the<br />

Crucifixion will endure throughout the ages," but it<br />

proceeds, "The true atonement is the ennobling of<br />

the nature, the pacifying of the spirit, the making<br />

at one the human <strong>and</strong> Divine." The new <strong>religion</strong> will<br />

have but one confession, "Love <strong>and</strong> faith, <strong>and</strong><br />

Our Father which art in Heaven." It is evident that<br />

<strong>Modern</strong> Spiritism <strong>and</strong> the true Spiritualism of<br />

Christianity have little in common.<br />

Neither the atonement nor the resurrection are<br />

accepted by Spiritism. That Christ is now alive<br />

in the other world with myriads of the living host<br />

of Heaven, as well as with the spir<strong>its</strong> of the dead, is<br />

absolutely unknown to it.<br />

Sir Oliver Lodge beautifully says in "Raymond,"<br />

the shame<br />

"Christ's advent is the glory, his reception<br />

of the human race," but he does not point out that<br />

that shame has been turned by God into glory on<br />

the Cross, <strong>and</strong> into the redemption of the world;<br />

for salvation is to be found in the Cross, not in the<br />

cradle, of the Lord Jesus Christ. The language <strong>and</strong>
