amid so many marvels, that the secret of<br />
materialisation<br />
may yet be fully revealed, without our having<br />
hasty recourse to "spirit" theories. Once more,<br />
then, let me emphasise the fact that no theories of<br />
another world can be based on physical phenomena,<br />
<strong>and</strong> that the doctrines of Spiritism, such as they<br />
are, rest on the supposed objective communications<br />
received through mediums <strong>and</strong> otherwise.<br />

But to return, <strong>and</strong> continue our epitome of the<br />
Spiritist presentment of the other world. Mr. Stead,<br />
in speaking further of the departed, is equally devout,<br />
though hardly so orthodox. He says (or, rather, the<br />
spirit speaking through him): "All the saved <strong>and</strong><br />
lost meet a message of love <strong>and</strong> mercy when they<br />
die; but some know Christ not, <strong>and</strong> the lost see Him<br />
not." "There are three essentials to see the eternal<br />
realities: the heart of a child, keen common-sense,<br />
<strong>and</strong> patience." How intensely "W. T. Steadish"<br />
all these communications are, <strong>and</strong> what a gulf between<br />
them <strong>and</strong> others we shall quote from the same<br />
Spiritist faith! Truly, in this case," from the same<br />
fountain come sweet waters <strong>and</strong> bitter!<br />
As to locale, we are told by one spirit the other<br />
world is on the earth just where we are; by another<br />
that it is beyond the Milky Way a distance so<br />
remote that, travelling at twelve million miles a<br />
minute, it would take some 15,000 years to reach!<br />

Sir Oliver Lodge seems to know more than most<br />
about this mysterious region, <strong>and</strong>, in "Christopher,"
