door, but could get no reply. A little later she<br />
knocked again, without getting any response. She<br />
then turned the h<strong>and</strong>le <strong>and</strong> opened the door, <strong>and</strong> saw<br />
the Baptist minister lying awake in bed <strong>and</strong> smiling.<br />
Something new <strong>and</strong> strange in his face alarmed<br />
her, <strong>and</strong> she went out, closing the door, <strong>and</strong> told the<br />
cook. The latter was an experienced married woman<br />
<strong>and</strong> used to emergencies, <strong>and</strong> declared she would<br />
soon find out what it was; so the two returned <strong>and</strong><br />
entered the bedroom. The Baptist minister still<br />
retained his fixed smile, but did not attempt to<br />
answer any of the queries as to how he felt, if there<br />
was any pain, what he was smiling at, etc.<br />
The Cook's Diagnosis<br />
The cook, evidently a close observer, then noticed<br />
a little<br />
fluid trickling from the corner of his mouth,<br />
<strong>and</strong> when she smiled at him he began making<br />
a low noise, described, I believe, by the initiated as<br />
"gurgling."<br />
"Bless his dear heart," cried the cook, in an<br />
uneasy ecstasy, "Why, he's a baby; look at him<br />
dribbling. Anyhow we will soon see."<br />
A little tea <strong>and</strong> bread <strong>and</strong> butter had already been<br />
brought in, but nothing would induce the infantminister<br />
to look at them.<br />
The cook went out, <strong>and</strong> returned with a spoon<br />
<strong>and</strong> some sweetened milk in a saucer. She extemporised<br />
a bit <strong>and</strong> began feeding him in bed. He<br />
waved his arms about <strong>and</strong> kicked his legs in<br />
ecstasy, <strong>and</strong> smiled still more as he took spoonful<br />
after spoonful.<br />
Cook, however, delighted with her new charge,
