apology must be that I don't want to recur to this<br />
subject.<br />
I wish to present a truthful picture of the dangers,<br />
which are not accidental <strong>and</strong> occasional occurrences<br />
due to ignorance in controlling the phenomena;<br />
but which, on the contrary, are an essential factor<br />
of them; so that the greater the advance in the<br />
study, <strong>and</strong> the greater the experience, the greater<br />
the danger of "possession."<br />
I wish to show that the terrible warnings of<br />
Scripture against all forms of necromancy, against<br />
all attempts of communication with another world,<br />
so far from being, as is so generally believed, the<br />
foolish prejudice of the infancy <strong>and</strong> ignorance of<br />
humanity, to be now dismissed with contempt by<br />
the matured wisdom <strong>and</strong> great knowledge of our<br />
time, are, to our dismay, justified on every side by<br />
actual scientific experiment.<br />
Most now confess the phenomena real; also the<br />
experiments to prove the existence of spir<strong>its</strong> in<br />
another world, as well as the existence of the "other<br />
world" <strong>its</strong>elf. True, it was not apparently necessary<br />
for any of our race to have recourse to this evidence,<br />
as our proud boast for ages has been in a Book<br />
which foretold all this, that we declared we believed<br />
was inspired, <strong>and</strong> we circulated it to all our more<br />
benighted brothers in millions (see reports of the<br />
British <strong>and</strong> Foreign Bible Society), <strong>and</strong> this Book<br />
was, as I have said, full of "the other world" <strong>and</strong><br />
contained much information concerning the spir<strong>its</strong><br />
inhabiting it.<br />
