She then got a further message from him, <strong>and</strong> he<br />
said he was drowned, <strong>and</strong> didn't suffer. News of<br />
his death came days after*<br />
Professor Jacks, then President of the S.P.R.,<br />
says a spirit told him about a MS. lying in his study<br />
drawer, of which no one knew but himself, <strong>and</strong><br />
quoted from it.<br />
"Spir<strong>its</strong>," says Professor Jacks, "are apt to get<br />
mixed. For instance, if<br />
speaking to Sir Walter<br />
Scott, the spirit would declare he died one thous<strong>and</strong><br />
miles from Abbotsford; <strong>and</strong>, when asked which<br />
Scott he was, would reply, 'Sir Gilbert.'"<br />
Professor Jacks said he did not know what to make<br />
of all this. It seemed to him, after all these years,<br />
they were only beginning ;<br />
<strong>and</strong> the haste some people<br />
were showing to prove that "survival after death"<br />
was the only explanation was only damaging<br />
inquiry.<br />
After all, it is not perhaps what is said on these<br />
occasions that is of so much importance, as the mere<br />
fact that anything is said at all.<br />
When I was at Elizabeth College, in Guernsey,<br />
the niece of our then ambassador at Berlin, a lady<br />

Arab gentleman, known to me, did not give it up,
