widow was found, <strong>and</strong> stated he had died on August<br />

5th, 1874. Full reports of this case are in the Proceedings<br />

of the Psychical Research Society, Vol. XI.<br />

With regard to the story of Abraham Florentin,<br />

F. W. H. Myers remarks: "I hold that the surviving<br />

spirit of A. F. really did speak through Mr. Stainton<br />

Moses." By now Mr. Myers probably knows if this<br />

belief is true.<br />

Other Cases<br />

When E. R. Bates was taking a message the table<br />

rapped out "H A." Bates said "The next letter<br />

is 'V,'" but a most emphatic "no" came; so they<br />

went on through the alphabet, <strong>and</strong> got to Y without<br />

response; but at Z a clear "yes" came. Then<br />

"A" came, <strong>and</strong> the message read, "You hazard<br />

my respect if you don't give up occult <strong>science</strong>."<br />

A spirit message given through a private medium<br />

in Engl<strong>and</strong> was finished, three days later, by Mrs.<br />

Piper, in Boston with the remark from the spirit,<br />

' '<br />

I am afraid I did not make myself quite clear three<br />

days ago."<br />

A well-known medium had living friends who<br />

could write messages by his h<strong>and</strong> easier than he<br />

could write himself, <strong>and</strong> did so.<br />

It<br />

must be remembered that automatic writing is<br />

always preferred to raps, being so much quicker.<br />

Of course, <strong>its</strong> chief objective has always been, for<br />

the last fifty years, the hope that it may bring the<br />

living into touch with some one beyond the grave.<br />
