in short, a whole nation, not of imaginative Celts,<br />

but of cold-blooded, slow-minded Anglo-Saxons, all<br />

involved in one common gigantic delusion, which<br />

was believed by them so implicity that to doubt<br />

their word was to court their severe displeasure <strong>and</strong><br />

to write oneself a fool.<br />

It was not that they all saw or heard the same<br />

thing; they<br />

did not<br />

Ṫhe Same Lie<br />

But they one <strong>and</strong> all believed the same lie!<br />

Not that any authority ever told this lie; but it<br />

sprang up practically almost of <strong>its</strong>elf in a night, <strong>and</strong><br />

in twenty-four hours seemed common property,<br />

all over Engl<strong>and</strong>, with a few doubters at a heavy<br />

discount.<br />

Grave parsons had heard crowds, with their<br />

bearded heads out of the carriage windows, talking<br />

<strong>and</strong> shouting Russian as they slowly passed some<br />

wayside station. My brother-in-law, as a special<br />

constable in Middlesex, told me he had special<br />

warning to guard two bridges as the Russian Army<br />

trains were to pass that night. Another cousin in<br />

Somerset watched a long<br />

train full of Russians<br />

slowly pass under the road bridge below his<br />

house.<br />

An interesting letter from Aberdeen told me of four<br />

long trains full of Russians which had been despatched<br />

south that night, holding up the ordinary traffic.<br />

These had come from Archangel<br />

!<br />

Another helped to give refreshments to the<br />

Russians at a wayside station, <strong>and</strong> another saw<br />

thous<strong>and</strong>s off at the docks. I might go on for
