Owing to the necessity for reducing transniissions to tlic miniiiiuni, it<br />

was also necessary to hnvr some <strong>of</strong> the codc words, not ncudod for airways<br />

service, cut from the signals at the sending centers before transmission<br />

wart made by teletype. ApparcAntly sonic confusion line nristm<br />

regarding this, arid in order to clarify the matter the following is proniulgated<br />

for the information <strong>and</strong> guidnncc <strong>of</strong> all concrrncd, cffectivc<br />

December 20, 1932:<br />

(a) Signals, loth a. rn. <strong>and</strong> p. m., for stations not listed in Ixmgraphs<br />

9 <strong>and</strong> 10 <strong>of</strong> the circular, “Changes in Airways Service for the Purpose <strong>of</strong><br />

Effecting Economies”, dattd Novcniber 16, 1932, will includc, in tho<br />

order nurr~ed, oiily words for prcwurc <strong>and</strong> trmporatura ; direction <strong>of</strong> wind,<br />

state <strong>of</strong> weather, <strong>and</strong> wind velocity; pressure change <strong>and</strong> iririxiinuin or<br />

minimuin ternpcmture; the, character, <strong>and</strong> amount <strong>of</strong> prcciyitution ;<br />

thunderstorms. No other words will be transmitted in thew rcports.<br />

(b) Signals, both a. m. <strong>and</strong> p, m ., for the rttations listed in paragraph<br />

0 <strong>of</strong> the oircular wjll include, in the order 12(17ned, only code word6 for<br />

pressure <strong>and</strong> temperature; direction <strong>of</strong> wind, fitate <strong>of</strong> wcather, t~nd wind<br />

velocity ; prcssure change <strong>and</strong> maxinium or minimum tcn~~)eraturc ;<br />

precipitation ; thunderstorms; clouds.<br />

(c) Signals from stations listed in paragraph 10 <strong>of</strong> the circular will<br />

include the code words listed in paragraph (a) above, in the order nwmed<br />

thewin, plus an additional 6-letter word for ceiling, vieibility, <strong>and</strong> dew<br />

point, which will be placcld at the end <strong>of</strong> the report.<br />

The foregoing refers only to signals transmitted from San FranciPco<br />

<strong>and</strong> Chiccyso by ttJctypr, <strong>and</strong> does not change or nlter my other type<br />

<strong>of</strong> transniission now made. The <strong>personnel</strong> at those points will “cut”<br />

the signals in accordance with the foregoing.<br />

Station deeignators will bc uecd for transmimion on the long linc8<br />

instead <strong>of</strong> station numm. Theso will be entercd by tho Ikpartment <strong>of</strong><br />

Comrncrce <strong>personnel</strong> at thc time <strong>of</strong> trunemiwion.<br />

Preemre chnngee.-In order to cotiform with the prcscnt prwticc requiring<br />

the entry <strong>of</strong> prc’ssure changes for the thne hourrt itninetlintcd9<br />

preceding the 8 a. rn. <strong>and</strong> 8 p. in. (IC. S. T,) observations, in the regular<br />

flignal reports, pressure clianyes will be rclportctl at each <strong>of</strong> the 4-hourly<br />

periods for the three hours iinrnediatrly preceding thc? observations, e. B. t<br />

thc pressure change reported in the 4 p. m. 4-hourly obsc~vution would<br />

be for three hours beginning at 1 p. in. Undtir this syatein only stations<br />

equipped with barographs, or those nialring hourly rqortR, will include<br />

this element jn tho 4-hourly reports.<br />

The above-mcntiond circular entitled “Changp~ in Airways fiervioe<br />

for the Purpose <strong>of</strong> Effecting Economics” was inailed to all stations in<br />

the continental <strong>United</strong> <strong>States</strong> on Noverribcr 18, 1982. Any station not,<br />

receiving a copy should inimediatc4y inform this <strong>of</strong>lice.
