METHODS<br />

2.1 Literature Search<br />

2.1.1 Data Sources<br />

Studies used in this review were obtained from electronic searches of the following databases<br />

beginning in October, 2006: Academic Search Complete, Alt HealthWatch, CINAHL Plus with Full<br />

Text, EBSCO Animals, E-Journals, ERIC, Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition, MasterFILE<br />

Premier, MEDLINE, Professional Development Collection, PsycARTICLES, Psychology and<br />

Behavioral Sciences Collection, PsycINFO, PubMed, Social Work Abstracts, and TOPICsearch.<br />

Keywords entered were: “equine and psychotherapy”, “equine and therapy”, “equine facilitated<br />

therapy”, “equine assisted therapy”, “equine and psychosocial”, “horse and therapy”, “horse and<br />

psychotherapy”, “therapeutic riding” and “therapeutic horsemanship”. In addition, a hand search of the<br />

journal Anthrozoös, the leading professional journal for publication of studies relevant to the field, was<br />

performed for years between 1997 and 2004 not available electronically. The gray literature was also<br />

searched for relevant papers, with no limits on publication date, using Dissertation Abstracts<br />

International and ProQuest Dissertations & Theses, as were white papers pertaining to the broad<br />

subject topic. The accumulated articles were scanned for references through March, 2009. Finally,<br />

requests for relevant papers were made to professionals involved in the practice of equine-facilitated<br />

mental health, including the listserves of the Equine Facilitated Mental Health Association and the<br />

Equine-Assisted Growth and Learning Association.<br />

2.1.2 Inclusion and Exclusion Criteria<br />

Following the initial search, 103 papers were retrieved. Studies eligible for inclusion in this<br />

review included interventions which incorporated equines in the psychotherapeutic treatment of ablebodied<br />

individuals with no limits on ages of participants. Evidence considered for inclusion was<br />
