Of the two copies <strong>of</strong> the text, annotated in laien<br />

Terry's hand and now at Smallhythe, one is evidently that<br />

sent to Shaw, and commented on by him in his letter <strong>of</strong><br />

September 8. 18 The note at New Arden 1,7,299 ("Oh, no,<br />

no") wary <strong>of</strong> him, is deleted and Mo, she is impulsive and<br />

innocent inserted by Ellen Terry in the upper margin.<br />

Further down the same page, at "I thank you for your pains/<br />

But not away to-morrow]", is the note polite "words<br />

words"-. Throughout the scene, ~:ilen Terry has modified<br />

her original markings in accordance with Shaw's comments.<br />

"What makes your admiration?" is now not suspicious, and<br />

"Will my lord say so?" which in the earlier markings has<br />

the emphasis on "my" has lost the instruction indignantly<br />

>roud. At "Am I one, sir?" Rising grandly has been erased,<br />

and "I pray you, sir/Deliver with more openness your answers/<br />

To my demands." is Disturbed agitated hQT emphatic.<br />

Imogen and lachimo have been sitting, in the earlier<br />

version <strong>of</strong> the scene, and when Imogen had risen grandly,<br />

lachimo seems to have done so too: when he reveals her<br />

husband's iniquities, she drops into her seat, covers her<br />

face with her hand and whispers "Let me hear no more",<br />

lachimo then makes his suggestion concerning revenge<br />

dropping deftly into a chair and whispering in her ear.<br />

She is still covered at "Reveng'd /If this be true, how<br />

should I be reveng'd'?' 1 Then, at the revelation she breaks<br />

out in Scorn blazing anger. Hhe goes to the right with the<br />

second "Vhat, ho, Pisanio!" (Irvin.r's version <strong>of</strong> the words)<br />

and with the third she Swoop/s_7 right over to L. to try<br />

for Pisanio in another room and clap hands. "You make<br />

amends" is spoken riot half believing, and her tone is<br />

stronger with each succeeding short speech in the scene.<br />

All this is removed in the revision. The traditional<br />

version <strong>of</strong> the scene which it suggests - very like Helen<br />

Faucit's reading - is superseded by instructions for Imogen
