4. Conclusions<br />
Differential scanning calorimetry was conducted for alloys of the system Al-Mg-<br />
Si with additions of Cu, Ag and Sm in order to determine the melting and<br />
solidification regimes as well as melting and solidification enthalpies. The<br />
experimental results are in good agreement with Thermo-Calc predictions.<br />
Thermo-Calc was then used to calculate the precipitation driving forces for<br />
AI 2 Cu and Mg 2 Si as a function of temperature and composition. It was found<br />
that a lower ageing temperature provides a higher precipitation driving force.<br />
Mechanical testing of the alloys investigated really showed that the modified<br />
alloys exhibited enhanced strength/ductility combinations than the conventional<br />
A357 alloy.<br />
