EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATIONS ON BINARY AND TERNARY RARE<br />

EARTH ALLOYS (WITH Mg or Al)<br />

Summary<br />

Experimental investigation of binary and ternary Aluminium (or Magnesium) alloys with<br />

the rare earth metals has been carried out. The investigation lines concerned:<br />

Phase equilibria determination, Thermodynamic measurements (formation enthalpy and<br />

heat capacity) In cooperation, mainly with other units, structural and magnetic properties<br />

were also studied.<br />

The different systems considered are the following:<br />

-Aluminium Systems<br />

Binary Systems:<br />

Phase equilibria investigation in the rare earth-rich regions of R-Al systems.<br />

Measurements of formation enthalpy of La-Al and Yb-Al alloys.<br />

Measurements of molar heat capacity of R-Al alloys (R=La, Ce, Pr, Nd).<br />

Ternary Systems:<br />

Enthalpies of formation and phase equilibria in selected regions of Ce-Al-Ni and Y-Al-Ni<br />

systems.<br />

-Magnesium Systems<br />

Binary Systems:<br />

Thermochemical investigation of selected Ce-Mg, Nd-Mg, Sm-Mg alloys.<br />

Ternary Systems:<br />

Structural, magnetic properties in the Ce-Mg-Y system.<br />
