Craterobathra ornata, new species<br />

Male, 16-20 mm; female, 17 mm. Head dark purple, forehead<br />

shining white with prismatic reflections, face white. Antenna<br />

deep purple, yellowish below, apical third white except tip. Palpus<br />

whitish with piu-ple reflections externally, purple internally. Abdomen<br />

deep purple, first segment with a pair of obhque lateral w^hite<br />

stripes, anal tuft yellow, venter piu-ple with a white transverse band<br />

across posterior haK of each sternite 2, 3, and 6, sternite 4 entirely<br />

wiiite, in female band of sternite 6 yellow. Legs dusky yellowish<br />

white, suffused Avith piu-ple, posterior leg with coxa and femiu- white<br />

below^, tibia grey purple with a broad pale yellow subbasal band,<br />

median tuft black; posterior tarsus piu-ple black, tip snow white.<br />

Thorax dark pm'ple.<br />

Forewing narrowiy lanceolate, pointed. Dark purple over more<br />

than anterior third,<br />

including a conspicuous w^hite subrectangular or<br />

UTCgular oval spot in center, connected with a second smaller similar<br />

dot below and before preceding; a bluish-metalUc, ill-defined spot<br />

at base of costa and a few similarly colored scales strewn below<br />

costa; a larger, w^ell-defined, erect-oval blue-metaUc spot between<br />

white spot and posterior edge of black area; posterior 2/3 of wing in<br />

male yellow, sHghtly strewTi with black, in female orange; this area<br />

including a narrow supramedian longitudinal black streak, from<br />

middle of wing to apex, dilated posteriorly; this streak including a<br />

brilliant blue-metaUic line along its middle, with pointed ends; a moderate<br />

black streak along termen not reaching tornus; a semioval<br />

black patch in tornus, except narrow edge filled out with metallic<br />

blue. Cilia grey mixed with w^hite, a wiiite bar before tornus, a<br />

broader black bar in tornus, ciha around apex black, here and there<br />

mixed with shining metallic scales.<br />

Hindwing dark coppery bronze, ciha black.<br />

Male and female genitaha as described with the genus.<br />

Material examined: Mindanao, Lanao, Butig Mts., 24 km NE<br />

of Butig, 1080 m, 20.VI.1958, 1 d", holotype, genit. shde 5322, 1 9,<br />

allotype, genit. shde 5323. Zamboanga del Norte, Masawan, trail<br />

to Mt. Mahndang, 1290 m, 5.VII.1958, rain forest, 1 cf, paratype<br />

(H.E. Milliron) (BMH). Davao Prov., east slope of Mt. McKinley,<br />

3000 ft., IX. 1946 (CNHM Phihppine Exped. 1946-47, H. Hoogstraal),<br />

1 cf , 1 9, para types.<br />

Head polished, shining pale ochreous, face whitish,<br />

side tufts on vertex blackish. Antenna bronze (palpi missing).
