During this year the United Nations celebrated the“International Year of Ecotourism” • The primary focus of ecotourism should be on the conservation of the natural environment and the quality of life for the local community • Developing countries look to ecotourism as a way to earn revenue from foreign countries, especially those of the rich developed world. • Countries where ecotourism is a significant portion of gross domestic product are: CostaRica, Ecuador, Nepal, Kenya, Madagascar, Bolivia, Belize, Dominica, Mongolia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Fiji, Namibia, Uganda, and Zimbabwe. • Tourism and travel is a primary source of foreign exchange earnings in 46 out of 50 of the world‟s LDC. • The share in international tourist arrivals received by emerging and developing countries has steadily risen, from 32% in 1990 to 47% in 2009. • The contribution of tourism to economic activity worldwide is estimated at some 5%. Tourism‟s contribution to employment tends to be slightly higher relatively and is estimated in the order of 6-7% of the overall number of jobs worldwide (direct and indirect).
