<strong>Coast</strong> <strong>Guard</strong> Break-Away Timer<br />

Mission Need: Capability to identify ship operators involved in Aids to Navigation (ATON) allisions resulting in<br />

significant financial loss for CG due to buoy repairs and replacements.<br />

<strong>Project</strong> Objectives:<br />

• Conduct research into past incidents and document requirements. Conduct<br />

market research into potential technologies.<br />

• Develop and test a proof-of-concept device that can be installed on smaller<br />

foam aids with mooring chains in locations that are prone to parting upon<br />

impact.<br />

• Ensure that the timer device is capable of recording the amount of time<br />

from impact to recovery of buoy.<br />
