Developmental Probation, Restriction<br />

& Suspension<br />

A. Developmental Probation - Math<br />

Students failing to attain a minimum grade of "C" in the<br />

mathematics developmental courses will be placed on<br />

remedial probation.<br />

1. FULL-TIME students are limited to 12 semester hours<br />

and must re-enroll immediately in the developmental<br />

course.<br />

2. PART-TIME students must include the developmental<br />

course as part of their course load in the next<br />

semester in which they enroll.<br />

B. Developmental Restriction - English<br />

Students failing to attain a minimum grade of "C"<br />

in English developmental courses will be placed on<br />

developmental restriction. (Developmental restriction<br />

takes priority over Developmental Probation).<br />

1. Students placed on developmental restriction are<br />

limited to a maximum credit load of 12-13 credits,<br />

which must include the needed developmental<br />

course. The remainder of courses must be selected<br />

from the limited load list.<br />

2. Students placed on developmental restriction who<br />

fail to pass the developmental course on the next<br />

attempt, are limited to 6-7 credits, which must include<br />

the developmetnal course.<br />

3. Students placed on developmetnal restriction who<br />

fail to pass the developmental course after having<br />

been limted to 6-7 credits, can onluy register for that<br />

developmetnal course.<br />

Center for Academic Excellence (CAE)<br />

A Center dedicated to student success, focusing on<br />

the first year<br />

At <strong>Ocean</strong> <strong>County</strong> <strong>College</strong>, we are committed to providing a<br />

community that will maximize the potential for success for<br />

every first year student. The faculty and staff are dedicated in<br />

offering a solid academic foundation through active learning,<br />

technology, innovative teaching, and diversified experiences<br />

while promoting an environment that encourages student<br />

involvement.<br />

The Center for Academic Excellence is an integral part of the<br />

OCC community, offering an array of services for students to<br />

achieve academic success.<br />

Academic Coaching<br />

Coaching sessions assist students in strengthening academic<br />

skills, improving study habits and developing organizational<br />

skills. Sessions focus on topics such as goal setting, time<br />

management, note taking, testing and stress management.<br />

These sessions are open to all students in the fall and spring<br />

semesters. Small groups meet in the Center for Academic<br />

Excellence. To register, please call the CAE at 732-255-0400<br />

ext. 2957.<br />

Academic Skills - ACAD 155 Student Success<br />

This course will assist students in building a solid foundation for<br />

a successful <strong>college</strong> experience through development of critical<br />

thinking, information literacy, interpersonal communication,<br />

communication in an academic environment, and resource<br />

acquisition. ACAD 155 is designed to meet three critical needs:<br />

1) to engage the student in learning opportunities, both in and<br />

out of the classroom, 2) to develop the appreciation of critical<br />

thought among all disciplines, and 3) to improve the student/<br />

faculty interactions at <strong>Ocean</strong> <strong>County</strong> <strong>College</strong>.<br />

Disability Services<br />

Disability Services provides academic adjustments for OCC<br />

students with all types of disabilities. Students must contact<br />

the CAE, complete an intake process including providing<br />

documentation of a disability. An Accommodation Plan for<br />

eligible students is developed in accordance with the Americans<br />

with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990 and Section 504 of the<br />

Rehabilitation Act of 1973. Both full and part-time students,<br />

including students attending distance learning classes, are<br />

encouraged to inquire about disability services at 732-255-0456.<br />

Academic advising is available for students with disabilities.<br />

NJ Stars Enrichment Services<br />

New Jersey Stars Enrichment Program, mandated by legislature,<br />

is required for all NJ Stars students who do not earn a 3.0 GPA<br />

during their first semester. Students in the Enrichment Program<br />

are required to take our ACAD 155 Student Success course to<br />

maintain their scholarship. The program also provides students<br />

with valuable resources and services such as advising, course<br />

scheduling, and tutoring to help NJ Stars students build a<br />

foundation for success in <strong>college</strong>.<br />

Peer Mentors<br />

Peer Mentors assist first year students in striving for excellence in<br />

their <strong>college</strong> endeavors at OCC by helping with orientation and<br />

registration, providing information about campus and academic<br />

supports, encouraging club and extracurricular involvement,<br />

and presenting in the ACAD 155 course. Mentors develop their<br />

own leadership and communication skills while focusing on the<br />

needs of first year students at OCC.<br />

Peer Tutors<br />

Peer Tutors are available in various content areas, such as<br />

mathematics, science, humanities, and social sciences. OCC<br />

students, under the recommendation of faculty, are able to<br />

become peer tutors and help students succeed in <strong>college</strong>. This<br />

is a valuable experience for the tutors as well as the tutees.<br />

Training and certification is available through the CAE/<strong>College</strong><br />

Reading and Learning Association (CRLA).<br />

Testing Center<br />

A placement test is required for all incoming first year students<br />

to identify the appropriate <strong>college</strong> level in the areas of math<br />

and English.<br />
