HEHP 151 Swimming II 1 cr.<br />

Swimming II is an elective course for<br />

those students who have either completed<br />

Swimming I and/or have the skills of the<br />

American Red Cross Swimming Level 4 or<br />

higher. Students must be able to swim 25<br />

yards of each of the 5 basic strokes: freestyle,<br />

backstroke, elementary backstroke,<br />

breast stroke and side stroke. This course<br />

will develop advanced techniques and<br />

endurance in swimming proper entries,<br />

starts and turns. Additional instruction in<br />

elementary forms of rescue and spinal injury<br />

management will be included. A Professional<br />

Rescuer CPR course will be part of the<br />

certification. Upon completion of the course<br />

students will receive an American Red Cross<br />

level 5 or 6 certificate. Student must come<br />

prepared to swim the first day of class. Code<br />

1 course fee.<br />

HEHP 152<br />

Lifeguarding 2 cr. (1+2)<br />

This course will teach individuals the skills<br />

and knowledge needed to prevent and<br />

respond to aquatic emergencies as set<br />

forth by the American Red Cross. The class<br />

will cover such topics to prepare them<br />

to recognize and respond quickly and<br />

effectively to emergencies and prevent<br />

drowning and injuries. This class will be a<br />

combination of swimming skills necessary<br />

to perform the job as well as classroom<br />

activities in recognition, CPR and First Aid.<br />

Students will receive American Red Cross<br />

certifications in Lifeguarding and First Aid<br />

for 3 years and a 1 year certification in<br />

CPR & AED for the Professional Rescuer<br />

upon successful completion of the course.<br />

STUDENTS MUST COME PREPARED TO<br />

TAKE THE PRECOURSE SWIM TEST THE<br />

FIRST DAY OF CLASS. Students should have<br />

completed either Swimming 1 con<strong>current</strong>ly<br />

or have American Red Cross level 4 or higher<br />

skills. Students should be able to swim the<br />

American Red Cross entry level test. The test<br />

includes swimming 300 yards of front crawl<br />

(freestyle) and breaststroke, swim 20 yards<br />

and retrieve a brick from 7 - 10 feet of water.<br />

Code 2 course fee.<br />

HEHP 160 First Aid/CPR/AED<br />

for the Workplace, Schools and<br />

the Community<br />

3 cr.<br />

A elective course designed to prepare the<br />

student in basic First Aid care to the sick or<br />

injured. Classroom drills and practice will<br />

prepare the student to react properly in an<br />

accident situation, plan his/her actions and<br />

exercise good judgment in adapting his/her<br />

classroom training to the accident scene.<br />

Students who successfully complete the<br />

course will receive their American Red Cross<br />

Community First Aid/CPR/AED for schools<br />

and community certification. Certification<br />

is based on Red Cross requirements. Code<br />

2 course fee.<br />

HEHP 172 International<br />

Folk Dance I<br />

1 cr.<br />

Students enrolling in this course will learn<br />

and perform a variety of basic dance<br />

steps and folk dances from the Balkans,<br />

Macedonia, Greece, Israel, France, England,<br />

Scotland, Ireland, Russia, Poland, Bolivia,<br />

Turkey, South Africa, and the United States.<br />

Code 2 course fee.<br />

HEHP 173 International<br />

Folk Dance II<br />

1 cr.<br />

International Folk Dance has become a<br />

popular and fun recreational activity. The<br />

dances included in this course were chosen<br />

because they are enjoyable, exotic, cultural,<br />

interesting and provide a variety of basic<br />

steps. They come from many countries,<br />

including The Balkans, Macedonia, Greece,<br />

Israel, France, England, Scotland, Ireland,<br />

Russia, Poland, Syria, Bolivia, Turkey, Africa<br />

and the United States. Code 2 course fee.<br />

HEHP 186<br />

Principles of Coaching 3 cr.<br />

This course is a comprehensive introduction<br />

to the coaching profession with emphasis<br />

on coaching for high school and club-level<br />

sports as well as for youth, recreational, and<br />

intercollegiate sports programs. Students<br />

will learn concepts and techniques of<br />

coaching used in working with athletes. Upon<br />

successful completion of the course, students<br />

may take a comprehensive exam administered<br />

by the American Sport Education Program<br />

(ASEP). Students who already possess a<br />

standard teaching certificate or a county<br />

substitute teacher certificate and who<br />

pass this exam will fulfill the educational<br />

portion (one of several requirements) of<br />

the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic<br />

Association’s (NJSIAA) coaching certification<br />

regulations.<br />

HEHP 188<br />

Introduction to Nutrition 3 cr.<br />

This course introduces students to the<br />

basic concepts of nutrition and provides<br />

information they can use in making dietary<br />

decisions. Topics covered include guidelines<br />

for a healthy diet; carbohydrates, fats,<br />

proteins, vitamins, and minerals; digestion;<br />

food safety; and world hunger. HEHP<br />

188 may provide a foundation for the<br />

more advanced Nursing Nutrition course.<br />

However, students enrolling in the AAS in<br />

Nursing program cannot use this course to<br />

replace NURS 174: Nutrition.<br />

HEHP 210 Karate I 2 cr. (1+2)<br />

An elective course designed for students<br />

and adults of the community who wish<br />

to learn the mechanics and techniques of<br />

Karate as a means of developing new activity<br />

patterns for health, conditioning and selfdefense.<br />

Code 2 course fee.<br />

HEHP 225<br />

Contemporary Health 3 cr.<br />

Students will develop skills needed to meet<br />

challenges to their health and optimize<br />

their physical and psychological wellbeing.<br />

Topics to be examined include<br />

consumer education, fitness, family living,<br />

nutrition, mental health, dependency,<br />

substance abuse, and infectious and chronic<br />

diseases. The focus of the course will be<br />

on the importance of critical thinking<br />

emphasizing self-empowerment, prevention<br />

and understanding of the health impact<br />

on human diversity. Will fulfill General<br />

Education Requirements. Code 2 course fee.<br />

HEHP 226<br />

Women’s Health<br />

3 cr.<br />

An elective course designed to provide<br />

health information pertinent to Women’s<br />

Health and Wellness for the new century.<br />

It may also be transferable into the Exercise<br />

Science, Women’s Studies, and Nursing<br />

programs at four year institutions. Health<br />

care needs of women including promoting<br />

health, maintaining wellness, and common<br />

physical and psychological conditions<br />

pertinent to health are identified. Historical,<br />

political, economic and social influences will<br />

be examined for their impact on women as<br />

consumers and providers of health care.<br />

Strategies to empower women to change<br />

their outlook of how they deal with the<br />

present health care system will be explained.<br />

HEHP 227 Introduction to<br />

Public Health<br />

3 cr.<br />

This course introduces the student to the<br />

<strong>current</strong> issues in public health today from<br />

a local perspective to a global perspective.<br />

It includes such areas as community health<br />

problems, communicable disease control<br />

and the roles of public health professionals<br />

including nursing.<br />

HEHP 228 Care & Prevention<br />

of Athletic Injuries 3 cr.<br />

This is an introductory course designed to<br />

instruct the student in the care and prevention<br />

of athletic injuries. This course is essential<br />

for the future physical education teacher,<br />

coach or athletic trainer. Instruction in First<br />

Aid, taping techniques, hot and cold therapy,<br />

and situational practices will be included.<br />
