SPECIALIZED PROGRAMS<br />

English-as-a-Second-Language Program<br />

Students entering <strong>Ocean</strong> <strong>County</strong> <strong>College</strong> who are nonnative<br />

speakers of English, identified as needing English<br />

language instruction, will be referred to the English as a<br />

Second Language Program for testing and placement. The<br />

ESL Program offers language instruction at the beginning,<br />

intermediate, and advanced levels. In addition, it offers a<br />

studies -skills course for students who have completed their<br />

ESL course work and are taking reading and writing courses<br />

with native speakers. Courses for each level are listed below.<br />

Beginning Level:<br />

ENSL 002: ESL Elementary English II<br />

ENSL 003: ESL Elementary English III<br />

Intermediate Level:<br />

ENSL 004: ESL Intermediate Listening & Speaking<br />

ENSL 005: ESL Intermediate Reading & Vocabulary<br />

ENSL 006: ESL Intermediate Writing<br />

ENSL 007: ESL Intermediate Grammar<br />

Advanced Level:<br />

ENSL 008: ESL Advanced Grammar<br />

ENSL 009: ESL Advanced Reading & Writing<br />

These classes are for institutional credit only; they do not<br />

count toward graduation.<br />

High School Students<br />

Participation in the following programs is arranged through<br />

the high school guidance department, and students must<br />

be recommended by a high school guidance counselor. For<br />

more detailed guidelines, contact your high school guidance<br />

office or call the Office of Registration and Records at 732-<br />

255-0304.<br />

Early Admission Program<br />

Under the Early Admissions Program policy, high school<br />

students who have completed their junior year, whose class<br />

rank is at least at the 90th percentile and who meet certain other<br />

admissions criteria including SAT performance may, with the<br />

concurrence of their high school administration, matriculate as<br />

full-time degree students at <strong>Ocean</strong> <strong>County</strong> <strong>College</strong>.<br />

Jump Start Program<br />

With the concurrence of their high school administration, junior<br />

or senior high school students may enroll as part-time, nondegree<br />

students at <strong>Ocean</strong> <strong>County</strong> <strong>College</strong> in the "Jump Start"<br />

Program. Jump Start students may register for a maximum of two<br />

courses per semester while attending high school.<br />

Reduced tuition is available, excluding all online courses.<br />

Distance learning courses are not recommended for students<br />

in the Jump Start Program.<br />

Tech Prep<br />

Tech Prep is a partnership between <strong>Ocean</strong> <strong>County</strong><br />

<strong>College</strong> and area high schools to develop highly skilled,<br />

performance oriented workers in demand occupations for<br />

the future. Students from the participating high schools<br />

comprising the 2+2+2 Tech Prep Consortium can continue<br />

their education at OCC with a coordinated curriculum that<br />

assures continuity in instruction and eliminates duplication<br />

of educational experiences. Many students go on to receive<br />

baccalaureate degrees through the<br />

2+2+2 Tech Prep Program. For information on specific<br />

programs call School Relations at 732-255-0477.<br />

Academic Honors Recognition<br />

<strong>Ocean</strong> <strong>County</strong> <strong>College</strong> offers talented, motivated students<br />

an opportunity to earn an Academic Honors Recognition<br />

(AHR). Students must receive approval of the Honors Program<br />

Coordinator in order to pursue this recognition.<br />

To receive the recognition, students must do the following:<br />

• Participate actively in an OCC honor society (such as Phi Theta<br />

Kappa, Alpha Beta Gamma, Psi Beta, Lambda Epsilon Chi or Mu<br />

Alpha Theta) or in a <strong>college</strong> or community service organization<br />

• Complete the following courses with a minimum grade of “C”:<br />

• HONR 280: Honors Interdisciplinary Seminar (3 cr.)<br />

• HONR 281: Honors Research Project (1 cr.)<br />

• Maintain a 3.5 GPA<br />

The Honors Research Project noted above may take many forms,<br />

including that of a standard research paper, a series of scientific<br />

experiments, or an extended literature review in a given field,<br />

among other possibilities.<br />

The two honors courses noted above will be identified on<br />

students’ transcripts. Students will also receive a letter from<br />

the <strong>Ocean</strong> <strong>County</strong> <strong>College</strong> President congratulating them on<br />

their achievement.<br />

Students interested in pursuing an Academic Honors<br />

Recognition are invited to learn more about this opportunity by<br />

contacting the Honors Program Coordinator who will provide<br />

guidance, answer questions about the process, and certify<br />

completion of the requirements.<br />

Kean-<strong>Ocean</strong><br />

Earn credits toward your Bachelor’s or Master’s degree on the<br />

<strong>Ocean</strong> <strong>County</strong> <strong>College</strong> campus with the OCC/Kean University<br />

Partnership. Kean University and <strong>Ocean</strong> <strong>County</strong> <strong>College</strong><br />

(Kean-<strong>Ocean</strong>) have established a partnership that enables area<br />

residents to complete the upper division courses required for<br />

certain Kean University undergraduate degree programs and<br />

specific graduate programs on the campus of OCC.<br />

Graduate<br />

Courses are being offered at OCC for Kean master’s degrees<br />

in Counselor Education (with State certification for school<br />

counseling), Educational Leadership (with State certification<br />

for supervisor and principal), Nursing, and the Executive<br />

Master’s degree programs in Business Administration and Public<br />

Administration.<br />
