INTR 290 Internship 3 cr.<br />

(0+0+9)<br />

This course offers students the opportunity<br />

to apply academic knowledge gained<br />

from the classroom to various work<br />

environments. The 135-hour internship<br />

will be directly related to students’ career<br />

goals in their areas of study. By completing<br />

an internship, students will be involved in<br />

emerging workplace trends and enhance<br />

their employability. Students wishing to<br />

transfer their internship credits to a fouryear<br />

baccalaureate program should consult<br />

the <strong>college</strong> or university to which they wish<br />

to transfer. Prerequisite(s): Applicants must<br />

also comply with the <strong>Ocean</strong> <strong>County</strong> <strong>College</strong><br />

Internship Guidelines and complete an<br />

Internship Application, which are available<br />

in the Academic Affairs Office. Applicants<br />

must also have an overall GPA of 2.5.<br />

Elementary Italian I 3 cr.<br />

This is an elementary <strong>college</strong>-level course<br />

that focuses on the development of basic<br />

conversation, reading and writing skills.<br />

Equal attention will be given to grammar<br />

structures and to the development of a<br />

vocabulary that will enable students to have<br />

simple but useful everyday conversations.<br />

The course is designed for beginning<br />

students or students who have taken one<br />

year or less of high school Italian.<br />

ITAL 102<br />

Elementary Italian II 3 cr.<br />

This is an elementary <strong>college</strong>-level course<br />

that focuses on the development of basic<br />

conversation, reading and writing skills. Equal<br />

attention will given to grammar structures<br />

and to the development of a vocabulary<br />

that will enable students to have simple but<br />

useful everyday conversations. It is highly<br />

recommended that students enrolling in<br />

this course have taken two to three years of<br />

high school Italian if they cannot meet the<br />

prerequisite. Prerequisite(s): ITAL 100.<br />

LATN 100<br />

Elementary Latin I 3 cr.<br />

While the focus of the class is on the orations<br />

of Cicero against Catline, translation of other<br />

authors are given equal weight. These relate<br />

to the politics, geography and culture of the<br />

Roman world and to later European cultures<br />

influenced by Latin. The 1st and the 4th<br />

orations against Cataline are also covered.<br />

This course is designed for beginning<br />

students or students who have taken one<br />

year or less of high school Latin.<br />

LATN 102<br />

Elementary Latin II 3 cr.<br />

This course promotes the skill areas of<br />

translating, reading and scansion of Virgil.<br />

The complexities of tanslation and of the<br />

accurate pronunciation of Roman poetry in<br />

dactylic hexameter are emphasized. Special<br />

attention is paid to the life, art, genius and<br />

influence of the author of the Aeneid. The<br />

central themes of his book (such as love,<br />

suffering, patriotism, and duty) are studied<br />

closely, as are authors such as Homer,<br />

Lucretius, Catullus and Dante, who are<br />

related to an understanding of Virgil. It is<br />

highly recommended that students enrolling<br />

in this course have taken two to three years<br />

of high school Latin if they cannot meet the<br />

prerequisite. Prerequisite(s): LATN 100.<br />

LATN 201<br />

Intermediate Latin I 3 cr.<br />

This course studies the works of Cicero and<br />

the prose writings of other Latin authors,<br />

including Pliny and Allust. It is highly<br />

recommended that students enrolling in this<br />

course have taken four years of high school<br />

Latin if they cannot meet the prerequisite.<br />

Prerequisite(s): LATN 102.<br />

LATN 202<br />

Intermediate Latin II 3 cr.<br />

This course promotes the skill areas of<br />

A survey of the philosophical and historical<br />

background of the Federal and State<br />

systems of jurisprudence. An introduction<br />

to the nature and functions of the agencies<br />

responsible for administration of the State<br />

law. Develops and examines the role of the<br />

paralegal in his relation to the supervising<br />

attorney both as to ethical and professional<br />

concerns.<br />

LAAW 104 Introduction to<br />

Litigation<br />

3 cr.<br />

An analysis of the common types of litigation,<br />

premises of litigation, sources of law, the<br />

court systems, attorneys, types of suits,<br />

usual defenses, New Jersey civil procedure,<br />

discovery procedures, court procedures,<br />

trial, post-trial motion, appeal, enforcement<br />

of judgment. Particular attention to the<br />

role of the legal assistant in preparation of<br />

documents and assistance to attorneys in<br />

matters of litigation. Prerequisite(s): LAAW<br />

101.<br />

LAAW 105 Health Care<br />

& Elder Law<br />

3 cr.<br />

This course is designed for the legal assistant<br />

or health care professional who wants to<br />

further understand the legal requirements<br />

and legal influence in the delivery of health<br />

care services. Regulatory law, statutory law,<br />

and case law will be presented and studied.<br />

LAAW 106 Mediation<br />

& Conflict Resolution 3 cr.<br />

A study of the emerging field of conflict<br />

resolution as it relates to the paralegal. The<br />

course emphasizes alternative methods of<br />

resolving legal conflicts. The philosophy<br />

of the course embodies the idea that<br />

alternative methods of conflict resolution<br />

improve the quality of decision making,<br />

develop a greater capacity for avoiding<br />

protracted disputes and create a culture of<br />

cooperation. These are skills necessary for<br />

the paralegal as the field of law evolves from<br />

confrontation to cooperation.<br />

LAAW 108 Introduction to<br />

Employment Law 3 cr.<br />

This course is for employers, employees,<br />

paralegals, and other interested parties.<br />

Students will study common principles,<br />

United States and New Jersey legislations<br />

and administrative regulations, and legal<br />

issues affecting employee selection,<br />

employee termination, equal employment,<br />

labor-management relations, and privacy.<br />

This course is not intended for transfer.<br />

It offers an opportunity for professional<br />

development for people <strong>current</strong>ly employed<br />

in jobs related to law and human resources<br />

management.<br />

LAAW 201 Legal Research &<br />

Writing for Paralegals 3 cr.<br />

An introduction to legal research and writing<br />

designed for the legal assistant. The student<br />

will become familiar with the law library and<br />

the various legal reference material needed<br />

in determining the applicable law. Students<br />

will write memoranda presenting the results<br />

of the research. The course will contain<br />

several problems requiring legal research<br />

and memorandum writing utilizing statutes,<br />

case reports, citators, encyclopedias and<br />

other reference material. Prerequisite(s):<br />

LAAW 101 and ENGL 151.<br />

LAAW 203 Law Office<br />

Management<br />

3 cr.<br />

A course designed to prepare the paralegal<br />

to understand, work within and manage<br />

a law office. The functions and skills of<br />

planning, organizing, controlling and<br />

directing a law office are explored along<br />

with the parameters and policies of the<br />

business of law which will provide a strong<br />

foundation upon which to build a legal<br />

career. Prerequisite(s): LAAW 101 or consent<br />

of instructor.<br />
