MUSC 132 Introduction to<br />

Guitar Instruction II 3 cr. (2+2)<br />

This course is designed for students who<br />

have basic knowledge in guitar playing.<br />

The course is a practical way of introducing<br />

the materials of music to students who<br />

plan to play for their own enjoyment.<br />

Prerequisite(s): MUSC 131. Code 2 course<br />

This course is designed to give students<br />

experience in playing jazz in a large group<br />

setting. Emphasis will be placed on the<br />

fundamentals of jazz style, listening, and<br />

performance in a collaborative environment.<br />

This course will allow students to develop<br />

skills in sight-reading, rehearsal techniques,<br />

and improvisation within the big band<br />

format. Possession of the appropriate<br />

musical instrument and audition is required.<br />

Con<strong>current</strong> enrollment in Concert Band is<br />

desirable. Code 2 course fee.<br />

Introduction to Keyboard<br />

Instruction I 3 cr. (2+2)<br />

This course is designed as an introduction<br />

to piano playing for students with no prior<br />

music experience. In addition to sight<br />

reading, transposition and improvisation,<br />

this is a very practical way of introducing<br />

the materials of music to students who plan<br />

to study music further or just play for their<br />

own enjoyment. Code 3 course fee.<br />

Introduction to Keyboard<br />

Instruction II 3 cr. (2+2)<br />

This course is designed for students who<br />

have a basic knowledge of piano playing.<br />

In addition to continuing and expanding<br />

the topics of MUSC 150, the course will<br />

enable students to learn harmonization of<br />

tunes and basic elements of interpretation.<br />

Forms and styles of traditional music will be<br />

presented and supplemented with examples<br />

of students and instructor. Prerequisite(s):<br />

MUSC 150. Code 2 course fee.<br />

MUSC 160 <strong>College</strong> Choir I 1 cr.<br />

The aim of the choir is to develop and<br />

perpetuate a high standard of choralensemble<br />

singing. Open on a non-credit<br />

basis to interested students and others who<br />

of composition and student projects of a<br />

creative nature. Prerequisite(s): MUSC 181.<br />

Beginning Jazz Theory &<br />

Improvisation 2 cr. (1+2)<br />

This course will provide students with<br />

the basic skills required to create an<br />

improvisation. By understanding the basics<br />

of jazz theory and how to apply techniques<br />

in practice, students will learn how to<br />

practice and develop improvisational skills.<br />

No experience in playing jazz is required.<br />

MUSC 185 Introduction to Jazz<br />

History<br />

3 cr.<br />

This course is a survey of jazz music from its<br />

origins to the present. It focuses on historical<br />

as well as musical developments in jazz in<br />

the United States and on those musicians<br />

who have led in shaping the musical, cultural,<br />

social, and political significance of jazz. The<br />

course helps students develop the critical<br />

listening skills needed to identify the music’s<br />

defining elements and leading figures. In<br />

addition to fundamental aspects of the music<br />

(form, rhythm, harmony, style, aesthetics,<br />

and dance), this course also emphasizes the<br />

meanings that jazz music has had in various<br />

social, political, and historical contexts.<br />

Music Appreciation 3 cr.<br />

This course is planned primarily for<br />

students without previous training. The<br />

most important styles and types of music<br />

will be studied through the examination of<br />

representative examples drawn from the<br />

different eras of music history. Recorded<br />

and visual materials will be utilized to<br />

stimulate a discriminating understanding<br />

and enjoyment of the various styles and<br />

types of music.<br />

MUSC 194 Music of the<br />

World’s Peoples<br />

3 cr.<br />

This course is primarily for students without<br />

previous musical training. Through case<br />

studies, the music of various cultures<br />

is studied in the context of human<br />

life. Recorded visual materials and a<br />

student-selected "field study" stimulate<br />

understanding and appreciation for various<br />

types of music in our world.<br />

Intermediate Keyboard<br />

Instruction I 3 cr. (2+2)<br />

This course is for students with a background<br />

in the fundamentals of music and basic<br />

keyboard skills. Improvisation and creating<br />

accompaniments for melodies are taught as<br />

well as works from the standard keyboard<br />

repertoire. Prerequisite(s): MUSC 151. Code<br />

Intermediate Keyboard<br />

A continuation of MUSC 250 with instruction<br />
