Criteria for Admission<br />

1. Admission requirements for the <strong>college</strong> must be met.<br />

2. Admission requirements to the Nursing Program must be met.<br />

3. LPN students must be graduates of State Board of Nursing approved<br />

practical nursing programs. A <strong>current</strong> and valid license to practice<br />

nursing and <strong>current</strong> LPN practice are required.<br />

4. Successful completion of the ACE 1 Exam at 75% or higher as<br />

administered at OCC. This exam may be taken only once.<br />

5. Completion of all prerequisite and corequisite courses is required.<br />

6. Successful completion of the NURS 175 exam and practicum<br />

challenge for credits.<br />

Additional Requirements:<br />

1. Completion of a health record to include:<br />

New or re-entry students will not be admitted to the program<br />

if the health record is not completed and on file in the Nursing<br />

Program office by the date stated in the acceptance letter.<br />

Current students are required to maintain their health records<br />

as outlined in the student handbook or they will not be admitted<br />

into class, clinical or lab and will jeopardize their <strong>current</strong> seat.<br />

These health requirements may change as a direct result<br />

of health care delivery system mandates. The cost of these<br />

health requirements is borne by the student. It is the student’s<br />

responsibility to see that these records are complete and are in<br />

the Nursing Program office four weeks before the start of the<br />

semester.<br />

2. Students must maintain a <strong>current</strong> CPR certification from the<br />

American Red Cross as a Professional Rescuer or the American<br />

Heart Association as a Health Care Provider.<br />

3. Purchase of required uniforms, name pins and equipment in<br />

sufficient time to be properly attired when entering the clinical<br />

experience.<br />

4. Students must provide independent transportation to and from<br />

the <strong>college</strong> and clinical experience. Agencies throughout the<br />

state are utilized.<br />

5. Maintain a grade of “C” in all required courses.<br />

6. A cumulative grade of 75% is necessary to pass each NURS<br />

course as determined by individual course requirements AND<br />

satisfactory clinical performance.<br />

7. <strong>Ocean</strong> <strong>County</strong> <strong>College</strong> reserves the right to assess the nursing<br />

student for fitness for class/lab or clinical.<br />

8. Students must complete clinical facility orientations,<br />

confidentiality forms, and computer orientations every semester<br />

as required for clinical placement.<br />

9. The New Jersey Board of Nursing requires a criminal background<br />

check from graduates who are applying for a RN licensure.<br />

The candidate for admission to the OCC Nursing Program may<br />

consider the following questions prior to applying for admission<br />

to the program:<br />

a. Have you ever been indicted or convicted of any crime?<br />

b. Have you ever stolen or distributed any chemical substance?<br />

c. Have you ever been treated for alcoholism?<br />

d. Have you been an abuser or habitual user of a chemical<br />

substance?<br />

If you can answer “yes” to any of the questions, it is strongly<br />

recommended that you contact the Board of Nursing prior to<br />

entering the nursing program.<br />

OCC reserves the right to endorse a candidate for licensure.<br />

The privilege is awarded at the completion of the nursing<br />

program. When the candidate is recommended and the<br />

application has been approved, the student will be notified of<br />

eligibility to sit for the licensing examination by the New Jersey<br />

Board of Nursing.<br />

Nursing DEGREE Requirements<br />

Students must complete the following courses with a minimum<br />

grade of “C.”<br />

• ENGL 151 & ENGL 152: English I & II<br />

• PSYC 172: General Psychology<br />

• CHEM 180: Introductory Chemistry or CHEM 181: Gen. Chemistry I<br />

• BIOL 130 & BIOL 131: Human Anatomy & Physiology I & II<br />

• One Math course (except MATH 151) from the list of Approved<br />

General Education Courses (MATH 156 recommended)<br />

• One Humanities course from the list of Approved General<br />

Education Courses<br />

• OCC Requirement: Any course from the list of Approved General<br />

Education Courses or ACAD 155 or any HEHP course totalling 3<br />

credits.<br />
