Elementary Arabic I 3 cr.<br />

This is an elementary <strong>college</strong>-level course in<br />

Modern Standard Arabic (MSA). This course<br />

will introduce students to the listening,<br />

speaking, reading and writing skills that are<br />

the standard means of communication in<br />

the Arab world.<br />

ARBC 102<br />

Elementary Arabic II 3 cr.<br />

This course is the continuation of ARBC 100,<br />

the beginner’s course in Modern Standard<br />

Arabic (MSA). It will further develop the<br />

students listening, speaking, reading and<br />

writing skills in the standard means of<br />

communication in the Arab world. It will also<br />

introduce them to grammar, conjugation,<br />

and the usage of vowels in word cases.<br />

Prerequisite(s): ARBC 100.<br />

ARBC 201<br />

Intermediate Arabic I 3 cr.<br />

This course is a continuation of Elementary<br />

Arabic II. The course promotes language<br />

development in the areas of listening,<br />

speaking, reading, and writing, and<br />

emphasizes communicative skills through<br />

personalized, open-ended activities. In<br />

addition, the course further expands<br />

students’ awareness of the cultures and<br />

dialects of the Arabic-speaking world. Oral<br />

presentations and short papers in Arabic<br />

will be assigned. Prerequisite(s): ARBC 102.<br />

ARBC 202<br />

Intermediate Arabic II 3 cr.<br />

This course is a continuation of Intermediate<br />

Arabic I. The course further promotes<br />

language development in the areas of<br />

listening, speaking, reading, and writing,<br />

and reviews fundamental structures and<br />

how they progress into more complex<br />

grammatical structures and communicative<br />

skills. In addition, the course further<br />

develops students' awareness of the cultures<br />

and dialects of the Arabic-speaking world.<br />

Prerequisite(s): ARBC 201.<br />

ARTS 159 Visual Literacy 3 cr.<br />

To acquaint the student with the<br />

contemporary trends in mass visual media,<br />

both print and electronic, and to further<br />

build an awareness of the aesthetic,<br />

esoteric and communicative quality of<br />

the visual image, its meaning and quality,<br />

as it appears in advertising, journalism,<br />

still and motion picture photography,<br />

television and computer graphics.<br />

Ceramics I 3 cr. (2+2)<br />

Basic constructions and designs of clay<br />

pottery and sculpture are explored.<br />

Methods of making and applying glazes<br />

will be demonstrated. Additional laboratory<br />

time required outside of class hours.<br />

ARTS 174 Creative Arts for<br />

Children<br />

3 cr.<br />

This course deals with the methods<br />

and materials appropriate for basic arts<br />

experiences in early childhood education.<br />

Students will develop strategies and<br />

procedures for introducing children to<br />

experiences and environments based on<br />

cumulative, developmental and diverse<br />

learning situations. Projects in visual arts,<br />

music, dance and theater will be explored<br />

both in class and on site with opportunity<br />

and methods for class management and<br />

self-assessment. Code 3 course fee.<br />

ARTS 181 Art History I 3 cr.<br />

A survey of the visual arts, focusing on the<br />

sculpture, painting and architecture from<br />

the Prehistoric through the Gothic periods,<br />

this course explores the motivations, motifs,<br />

and vocabulary of art within its physical and<br />

socio-political context. Emphasis will be<br />

placed on identification of works and their<br />

association with their time period, culture<br />

and subsequent characteristics. Code 3<br />

course fee.<br />

ARTS 182 Art History II 3 cr.<br />

A survey of the visual arts, focusing on the<br />

sculpture, painting and architecture from<br />

the Gothic Period through the Impressionist,<br />

this course will investigates representative<br />

artists and their works. Emphasis will be<br />

placed on the identification of works, artists<br />

and techniques and motivations within the<br />

historical context. Code 3 course fee.<br />

ARTS 183<br />

Basic Drawing 3 cr. (2+2)<br />

Introduction to drawing from still life.<br />

Methods of handling charcoal, ink and<br />

various drawing materials will be discussed<br />

and applied. Code 3 course fee.<br />

ARTS 184 Two-dimensional<br />

Design 3 cr. (2+2)<br />

Course exposes students to two-dimensional<br />

elements as they appear on the surface of<br />

paper. The shape of objects, color, space and<br />

texture in relation to self-expression will be<br />

of primary importance. Code 3 course fee.<br />

Figure Drawing 3 cr. (2+2)<br />

Disciplined drawing approach to anatomy<br />

with emphasis on bone structure,<br />

musculature and its influence on surface<br />

of the figure. Involvement in creative<br />

composition. Prerequisite(s): ARTS 183.<br />

ARTS 186 Three-dimensional<br />

Design 3 cr. (2+2)<br />

Three-dimensional design is learned through<br />

demonstrations and student studio projects.<br />

The elements of design such as shape,<br />

line, space, texture and light are studied in<br />

applicable fields such as architecture and<br />

interior design. The course also explores the<br />

area of non-objective and abstract sculpture<br />

with ramifications for its universal use.<br />

ARTS 191 The Arts of the<br />

Islamic World<br />

3 cr.<br />

The course will examine the background,<br />

origins, and evolution of Islamic art and<br />

architecture from the 7th century rise<br />

of Islam to the present. The course will<br />

investigate the fundamentals of Islam<br />

as a faith and Islam’s relationship to the<br />

pre-Islamic past, as well as the theoretical<br />

problem of creating a new visual culture to<br />

serve a new religion and society. It will also<br />

provide a basic understanding of the major<br />

themes and important regional variations<br />

within the Islamic World, including the<br />

specialized Islamic Arts of India, Indonesia,<br />

North Africa and Turkey. Code 2 course fee.<br />

ARTS 192<br />

The Arts of Japan 3 cr.<br />

A survey of the history of Japanese art<br />

from Neolithic times to the present. Topics<br />

will include a wide range of art, craft,<br />

and architecture including Buddhist art<br />

and its ritual context, the aristocratic arts<br />

of the courts, monochromatic Zen ink<br />

paintings, the prints and paintings of the<br />

Floating World, and contemporary artists<br />

and designers. The class will focus on<br />

the unique development of Japanes art,<br />

its contributions to Western Art, and its<br />

significant influence upon modern world<br />

culture. Code 2 course fee.<br />

ARTS 205 Art History III-<br />

Twentieth Century Art 3 cr.<br />

A survey of art from the emergence of a<br />

new direction of art in the late 19th century<br />

through its various transformations to<br />

the present period. Close attention is<br />

paid to the sociological, political and<br />

economical context from which the work<br />

has materialized. It is recommended that<br />

students enrolling in this course have taken<br />

Art History I. Code 3 course fee.<br />

ARTS 206 American Art 3 cr.<br />

American Art reflects the broad cultural and<br />

historical spectrum and great ethnic diversity<br />

that has contributed to the formation of<br />

America. This course will thematically and<br />

chronologically examine the origins and<br />

evolution of art and architecture of America<br />

from pre-conquest to the present focusing<br />

on the diversity of style, subject matter,<br />

regional characteristics and influences, and<br />

methods and mediums of artistic creation.<br />
