World Religions<br />

3 cr.<br />

The course examines the historical<br />

evolution, fundamental doctrines, beliefs,<br />

and practices of religious traditions. The<br />

course has an emphasis on some essential<br />

differences and similarities which exist<br />

among religious traditions. The major<br />

religions covered are tribal/oral traditions,<br />

Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism, Taoism,<br />

Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.<br />

PHIL 198 Introduction to<br />

Business Ethics<br />

3 cr.<br />

This course explores major ethical issues<br />

facing the business community today,<br />

such as job security, privacy, health care,<br />

whistle blowing, environmental, employee<br />

rights, businesses’ social responsibility,<br />

affirmative action programs and the political<br />

responsibility of multinationals. The<br />

emphasis of this course will be on teaching<br />

students to use critical thinking to arrive at<br />

informed moral judgments.<br />

PHIL 290<br />

Biomedical Ethics 3 cr.<br />

This course analyzes major ethical issues<br />

facing the medical community today, such as<br />

medical paternalism and patient autonomy,<br />

informed consent, right to refuse treatment,<br />

euthanasia and physician assisted suicide,<br />

the mortality of abortion, reproductive<br />

technologies, stem cell research, cloning,<br />

medical allocation policy and the right to<br />

health care. The emphasis of this course<br />

will be on teaching students to use critical<br />

thinking to arrive at informed moral<br />

judgments. It is recommended that students<br />

taking this course have already completed<br />

PHIL 191.<br />

PHIL 293<br />

Religious Experiences 3 cr.<br />

This course is a study of the varieties of<br />

religious experience that individuals and<br />

groups use to transform their lives from<br />

a problematic state of existence to an<br />

existence that is shaped by values based<br />

in religious belief. Specific topics include<br />

multi-religious views of the absolute,<br />

arguments for the existence of god, the<br />

nature of evil and human suffering, religion<br />

and its relation to moral conduct, the<br />

relation of faith and reason, and the relation<br />

of religion and science. The world's major<br />

religious beliefs permeate the course,<br />

i.e. Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism,<br />

Taoism, Shintoism, Judaism, Christianity and<br />

Islam. Prerequisite(s): PHIL 193<br />

COPH 181 Basic Digital<br />

Photography 3 cr. (2+2)<br />

This course teaches students the<br />

fundamentals of photography, including the<br />

use and handling of various digital cameras<br />

and specialized instruments. Students<br />

will study the history of photography,<br />

photo composition, and photographic<br />

aesthetics and learn to digitally process<br />

their images, make proof sheets, and<br />

enlarge photographic prints creatively and<br />

effectively. Students will create and organize<br />

a portfolio of photographic works. Code 5<br />

course fee.<br />

COPH 187 Experimental Digital<br />

Photography 3 cr. (2+2)<br />

Students will explore various digital<br />

picture-taking techniques in an endeavor<br />

to change, manipulate, vary, and abstract<br />

the photographic image. Students will<br />

explore a variety of black and white and<br />

color photographic approaches and use<br />

special effect lenses, high speed and<br />

time-lapse photography, and special<br />

lighting techniques. Students will create<br />

and organize a portfolio of photographic<br />

works demonstrating competence in these<br />

techniques. Prerequisite(s): COPH 181.<br />

Code 5 course fee.<br />

COPH 188 Intermediate Digital<br />

Photography 3 cr. (2+2)<br />

This course is a continuation of Basic<br />

Digital Photography COPH 181. Students<br />

will learn advanced techniques in camera<br />

handling and picture taking while<br />

exploring sophisticated methods in digital<br />

communication. The course will further<br />

encourage the development of creative<br />

expression within the student. Using the<br />

photography medium, the student will<br />

explore the photographic image as design,<br />

communication, advertising and art. Digital<br />

portfolios are produced by each student.<br />

Prerequisite(s): COPH 181. Code 5 course<br />

COPH 207<br />

Digital Journalism &<br />

Picture Editing 3 cr. (2+2)<br />

Photojournalism is designed to teach the<br />

principles of photographic reportage and<br />

documentation. Students will be given a<br />

historic background of photojournalism<br />

with special emphasis on the impact<br />

photography has had on the reporting of<br />

world, state and local events. Students will<br />

further develop basic skills in researching<br />

of information pertaining to a <strong>current</strong><br />

news event, collecting information for<br />

appropriate caption writing, picture editing<br />

and editorial layout. The course stresses the<br />

ability to reach the proper location, take<br />

the photographs, process the files, and<br />

process the image within time constraints<br />

which duplicate the expected performance<br />

on a daily newspaper, magazine or broader<br />

media coverage and print publication. A<br />

Digital SLR camera with built-in metering<br />

system is required for this course or a handheld<br />

light meter. An electronic flash unit for<br />

the camera is also required. Prerequisite(s):<br />

COPH 181. Code 3 course fee.<br />

COPH 280 Advanced Digital<br />

Photography 3 cr. (2+2)<br />

This course is intended to introduce the<br />

student to the use of various types of<br />

digital cameras and related photographic<br />

equipment. Included in the course study<br />

is the use and handling of assorted types<br />

of digital cameras in a variety of picture<br />

taking applications. Further, students will<br />

learn to download the images for computer<br />

enhancement in a broad range of both<br />

commercial and fine art work exploring<br />

the full potential of this image making<br />

photographic medium. Emphasis in the<br />

course will be placed on both field and<br />

studio work involving but not limited to<br />

advertising, portraiture, product and fine<br />

art photography. Students will ultimately<br />

gain a working knowledge within the full<br />

range of digital still photography and the<br />

computer applications in the manipulation<br />

and computer enhancement of the still<br />

digital photographic image. Portfolios of<br />

individualized student work will be created<br />

by each student enrolled in the course.<br />
