2018 Olympics Sets Up the Environment<br />

Pyeongchang <strong>is</strong> determined <strong>to</strong> host an eco-friendly, low-carbon Olympics<br />

On January 26, Pyeongchang's bidding committee for the 2018 Winter<br />

Olympics set up the “Environment Subcommittee" in a bid <strong>to</strong> realize an ecofriendly,<br />

low-carbon Olympics. The Environment Subcommittee held its kickoff<br />

meeting at the Bears Tour<strong>is</strong>t Hotel in Chunchon. The Subcommittee appointed<br />

16 experts on ecosystems, climate chang, and water quality as subcommittee<br />

members, and Lee Jong-beom, professor of Environmental Science at<br />

Kangwon National University, as its head.<br />

At the kick-off meeting, the Environment Subcommittee prepared answers <strong>to</strong><br />

environmental questions, which will be included in Pyeongchang's application<br />

file.<br />

The paper d<strong>is</strong>cussed specific ways <strong>to</strong> outsource research activities <strong>to</strong> achieve a<br />

green Winter Olympics in 2018. Subcommittee chairman Lee Jong-beom said,<br />

"When it comes <strong>to</strong> the environment, Pyeongchang will come up with the most<br />

detailed and feasible master plan <strong>to</strong> differentiate Pyeongchang's version of an eco-friendly Winter Olympics from the rest. And transportation<br />

and management of stadiums will be prepared in a way that could contribute <strong>to</strong> the international efforts <strong>to</strong> tackle the <strong>is</strong>sues of<br />

global warming and greenhouse gas em<strong>is</strong>sions. The Environment Subcommittee plans <strong>to</strong> meet on a quarterly bas<strong>is</strong> <strong>to</strong> adv<strong>is</strong>e<br />

Pyeongchang's bidding committee for the 2018 Winter Olympics on the construction of stadiums and the overall management. In addition,<br />

the Subcommittee will actively provide environmental input in<strong>to</strong> the preparation of the application and candidate city files,<br />

which will be submitted <strong>to</strong> the International Olympic Committee (IOC).<br />

KDC Operates Total Digitalization System<br />

On January 27, <strong>Korea</strong> Digital Communications Corporation (KDC) announced<br />

that they will open KDC Scan Center, a digitizing documents system, in order <strong>to</strong><br />

support an establ<strong>is</strong>hment of electronic documents management system. The KDC<br />

Scan Center, located in Guro Digital Complex and boasting its 820 spare meters of<br />

space, has more than 600 millions of word processing capabilities per year. It provides<br />

<strong>to</strong>tal service solutions including consultant, building operating, maintenance<br />

and management. That deal with overall electric word processing operations, database<br />

building business solutions and financing operations for enterpr<strong>is</strong>es, research<br />

centers and public organizations. Documents digitization <strong>is</strong> used <strong>to</strong> describe the systems that transform all the papers <strong>to</strong> electronic documents.<br />

Th<strong>is</strong> allows for word processing operations <strong>to</strong> make exactly the same document as the original. It <strong>is</strong> expected <strong>to</strong> reduce a lot of<br />

time and cost as digital operation can be done online Kim Sang-jin, president of KDC said, "KDC Scan Center will provide us a lot of<br />

benefits such as increasing work efficiency, enabling faster processing and improving transparency in management because everything<br />

<strong>is</strong> done based on electronic certified system. Especially, 16 outsourcing offices that will be establ<strong>is</strong>hed soon in domestic market will be<br />

connected <strong>to</strong>gether through KDC Scan Center."<br />
