Abdul Aziz Al-Saud. Such developments<br />

were indicators that bilateral relations<br />

have entered a new phase of promotion<br />

<strong>and</strong> development. Seven Memor<strong>and</strong>um of<br />

Underst<strong>and</strong>ings were signed during<br />

President Roh’s visit to the Kingdom.<br />

The Republic of <strong>Korea</strong> is one of important<br />

countries for the Kingdom in terms of<br />

<strong>its</strong> economic international relations order.<br />

As being a developing country with a useful<br />

<strong>and</strong> impressive development experience,<br />

as well as <strong>its</strong> international influence<br />

as a G-20 member, <strong>and</strong> as one of important<br />

international trade partner with the<br />

Kingdom, <strong>Korea</strong> has acquired a unquie<br />

experience in facing international economic<br />

crises.<br />

Extending bilateral investments may<br />

lead to the strengthened political <strong>and</strong> economical<br />

ties, <strong>and</strong> thus achieve economic<br />

growth for both sides. Trade relations between<br />

Saudi Arabia <strong>and</strong> the Republic of<br />

<strong>Korea</strong> have witnessed a steady development<br />

during the last five years which is reflected<br />

by increasing of trade volume<br />

reached 300 percent during that period.<br />

The number of joint ventures reached<br />

around 98 projects, including industrial<br />

ones.<br />

Lastly, I pray for Almighty God to grant<br />

success to the leader of the renaissance<br />

march, the Custodian of the Two Holy<br />

Mosques Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz Al-<br />

Saud, King of the Kingdom of Saudi<br />

Arabia, <strong>and</strong> His Royal Highness Crown<br />

Prince Sultan bin Abdul Aziz Al-Saud,<br />

may God protect them, for their tireless efforts<br />

to promote the Kingdom to the highest<br />

position <strong>and</strong> to make the Kingdom’s<br />

people more happier. I may also pray for<br />

God every success in carrying out my missions<br />

<strong>and</strong> enhancing the distingushed between<br />

the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia <strong>and</strong><br />

the friendly Republic of <strong>Korea</strong>.<br />

Historical Site & Sightseeing<br />

Place in Saudi Arabia<br />

Al-Hijr (Madain Salih)<br />

In 2008, the Archaeological Site of Al-<br />

Hijr (Madâin Sâlih) was enlisted to the<br />

UNESCO’s list of the world cultural heritage<br />

as the first UNESCO’s World<br />

Heritage property to be inscribed in Saudi<br />

Arabia. Formerly known as Hegra it is the<br />

largest conserved site of the civilization of<br />

the Nabataeans south of Petra in Jordan. It<br />

features well-preserved monumental<br />

tombs with decorated facades dating from<br />

the 1st century BC to the 1st century AD.<br />

The site also features some 50 inscriptions<br />

of the pre-Nabataean period <strong>and</strong> some<br />

cave drawings. Al-Hijr bears a unique testimony<br />

to Nabataean civilization. With <strong>its</strong><br />

111 monumental tombs, 94 of which are<br />

decorated, <strong>and</strong> water wells, the site is an outst<strong>and</strong>ing example of the Nabataeans’ architectural<br />

accomplishment <strong>and</strong> hydraulic expertise.<br />

Mosque in Mecca<br />

As the city of Mecca is the holiest place in the entire Muslim world, Saudi Arabia is no<br />

stranger to travelers. For thous<strong>and</strong>s of years, pilgrims have flocked to the country to worship<br />

at the Gr<strong>and</strong> Mosque <strong>and</strong> the Kabaa shrine. The city, in the West of the country,<br />

welcomes some two million Muslims a year, who come as part of the Hajj pilgrimage,<br />

which makes up one of the five pillars of Islam.<br />
