Use of <strong>CHAMP</strong> connector<br />

systems involves other<br />

important decisions; choice<br />

of locking hardware, and<br />

choice of strain relief system/covers.<br />

Since the<br />

finished connection<br />

includes two connector<br />

halves (plug/male and<br />

receptacle/female), careful<br />

planning is essential to<br />

mechanically protect contact<br />

terminations and to<br />

maintain electrical integrity<br />

of mated connectors.<br />

Locking Hardware Options<br />

Locking hardware is used<br />

to secure mating <strong>CHAMP</strong><br />

connectors and to prevent<br />

unintentional separation.<br />

The following choices grew<br />

from widely-varied application<br />

needs—for reasons of<br />

economics, convenience,<br />

sophistication, or standardization,<br />

for example. Refer<br />

to Instruction Sheet<br />

IS 3160.<br />

Locking Latch (<strong>CHAMP</strong>-LOK<br />

Connector Design)<br />

Standard <strong>CHAMP</strong> connectors<br />

(except those for IEEE<br />

and shielded applications)<br />

are provided with guide<br />

tracks and slots (on plugs)<br />

and lead-in ramps (on<br />

receptacles) to allow use of<br />

a simple metal locking clip<br />

for securing mated connectors.<br />

The U-shaped locking<br />

latch is designed in three<br />

sizes—with the same basic<br />

part number, but with different<br />

dash numbers: No.<br />

552723-1 is used for 36-<br />

and 50-position connectors,<br />

552723-2 for 14- and<br />

24-position connectors,<br />

and 552723-3 for 64-position<br />

connectors.<br />

No tools are required for<br />

this locking system. Simply<br />

slide the latch onto guide<br />

tracks until tabs snap into<br />

slots. As connector halves<br />

are mated, tabs engage<br />

with lead-in ramps and<br />

spring over locking shoulder<br />

into receptacle slots.<br />

Locking is assured by an<br />

audible click. To release,<br />

push the latch forward to<br />

free tabs from slots. Note<br />

that locking latches cannot<br />

be used in rear-panelmount<br />

applications<br />

because of panel interference,<br />

nor can they be used<br />

with <strong>CHAMP</strong> shielded<br />

and competitive connectors.<br />

However, when<br />

<strong>CHAMP</strong>-LOK latches are<br />

used in conjunction with<br />

snap-in strain relief covers<br />

(panel-mount applications<br />

only), no other hardware is<br />

necessary.<br />

Screw Lock Hardware<br />

Screw lock hardware is<br />

generally used in sensitive<br />

or sophisticated applications<br />

where positive locking<br />

is required—to secure connectors<br />

to PC boards, to<br />

panels, and/or to each<br />

other. In cable-to-cable<br />

applications, two captive<br />

screws threaded into pretapped<br />

holes are generally<br />

the only screw lock requirements.<br />

In mounted<br />

applications, receptacle<br />

assemblies are usually fastened<br />

to boards or<br />

panels—with standoff<br />

screws, nuts, and bolts.<br />

The head of this special<br />

standoff screw has a<br />

threaded hole that accepts<br />

a captive screw, used to<br />

secure the mating connector.<br />

Screw lock hardware<br />

kits vary with connector<br />

types and applications—<br />

panel or board thickness,<br />

front- or rear-panel mount,<br />

for example.<br />

Bail Lock Hardware<br />

(Standard or Bent)<br />

Bail Lock hardware provides<br />

both locking and<br />

quick-release capabilities<br />

at both ends of mated connectors.<br />

Flanges on<br />

<strong>CHAMP</strong> plug connectors<br />

must be open ended for all<br />

bail lock applications. The<br />

open-end flanges accept<br />

bail clips (straight or bent<br />

90°) mounted to a mating<br />

receptacle connector.<br />

Standard bail clips are<br />

used where access to lock<br />

and release is not a problem.<br />

Bent bail locks are<br />

used primarily with right<br />

angle (90°) cable terminations<br />

where space is<br />

limited. Typical hardware<br />

kits include bail clips, flat<br />

and lock washers, mounting<br />

screws and nuts.<br />

<strong>CHAMP</strong> Connectors with<br />

Integral Latches<br />

These special <strong>CHAMP</strong> connectors<br />

are designed with<br />

an integral latching system<br />

that eliminates the need for<br />

additional locking hardware.<br />

Receptacle<br />

assemblies are preassembled<br />

with two plated steel<br />

spring catches (one at<br />

each end) that latch into<br />

cutout slots in mating plug<br />

connectors. To release a<br />

mated pair, simply depress<br />

catches into recessed<br />

areas and disengage.<br />

Note, however, that integral<br />

latches are not repairable<br />

or replaceable. Integrallatch<br />

connectors are<br />

presently available in 24-,<br />

36-, 50- and 64-position<br />

sizes.<br />

J-Hook Hardware<br />

The J-hook is a precisionformed<br />

metal bracket used<br />

as an alternate quick-fastening<br />

method for<br />

assembly hardware. Two<br />

tabs fit into recesses in the<br />

connector housing flange<br />

for screw-fastening. The<br />

inverted end of the J-hook<br />

snaps on the end of a mating<br />

connector, and holds it<br />

in place. This hardware is<br />

also used in confined areas<br />

instead of bent bail lock—<br />

with 90° two-piece, low- or<br />

standard-profile strain relief<br />

covers.<br />
