Bronchoscopy. Bronchoscopy is the visual examination of the bronchi of the lungs by the use of<br />

the bronchoscope which may be inserted into the oral or nasal cavities. The larynx, pharynx, and<br />

trachea may be visualized as the scope is passed to the bronchi (See F9, F10, F12). It may serve<br />

other purposes also. For example, it may be used to remove a <strong>for</strong>eign body from the bronchus, or<br />

<strong>for</strong> clearing a mucous plug which is causing atelectasis 1.<br />

Laryngoscopy. Direct Visualization: A laryngoscopy is the visual examination of<br />

the larynx and hypopharynx using a<br />

laryngoscope. Abstract what you think is<br />

pertinent in the laryngoscopy report<br />

(Example F2) and compare with the<br />

suggested abstraction on page 131.<br />

Indirect Visualization: Examination of the interior wall of the larynx<br />

by observation of the reflection of it in a<br />

laryngeal mirror<br />

latelectasis--Absence of air in the alveolar spaces resulting in incomplete expansion of the lungs<br />

at birth or collapse of the lungs of an adult.<br />
