ORGANIZATIONS<br />
IACR International Association of <strong>Cancer</strong> Registries: A voluntary non-governmental<br />
organization established in 1970 to represent the scientific and professional<br />
interests of cancer registries interested in the development and application of<br />
cancer registration and morbidity survey techniques to studies of well-defined<br />
populations.<br />
IARC International Agency <strong>for</strong> Research on <strong>Cancer</strong>: Established in 1965 within the<br />
framework of the World Health Organization (WHO), IARC is dedicated to<br />
research on cancer, particularly epidemiology of cancer and study of potential<br />
carcinogens in the human environment.<br />
UICC International Union Against <strong>Cancer</strong> (Union Internationale Contre le <strong>Cancer</strong>): An<br />
organization established to monitor cancer throughout the world. It disseminates<br />
current knowledge of cancer, its prevention, early detection, diagnosis, treatment,<br />
rehabilitation, and continuing care as well as knowledge in basic and clinical cancer<br />
research. It was first in the development of the TNM Clinical Staging<br />
Classification in the early 1950's, one of its many accomplishments.<br />
WHO World Health Organization: A United Nations organization established to monitor<br />
world health. It divides the world into seven regions with a headquarters in each<br />
region.<br />

AND ON-LINE DATA BASES<br />
ACTUR The Automated Central Tumor Registry System: A Department of<br />
Defense automated central tumor registry system established by the<br />
Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS) <strong>for</strong> Army,<br />
Navy, and Air Force hospitals (on-line data base).<br />
ICD-O The International Classification of Diseases <strong>for</strong> Oncology: The ICD-O,<br />
First Edition (1976), (published by WHO) permits coding of all neoplasms<br />
by topography, histology (morphology), and behavior. It also provides a<br />
separate grading and differentiation code. The ICD-O, Second Edition<br />
(1990), went into general use in the United States in 1992 (publication).<br />
MEDLINE<br />
An on-line version of Index Medicus published by the <strong>National</strong> Library of<br />
Medicine (NLM). It contains in<strong>for</strong>mation (abstracts) about the documents,<br />
but not the documents themselves (on-line data base).<br />
MEDLARS The MEDLARS system (NLM) is a basic guide to searching the various<br />
biomedical data bases. It contains more than 20 separate data bases, such<br />
as, MEDLINE to search <strong>for</strong> articles in recent journals, CANCERLIT to<br />
search <strong>for</strong> cancer literature, and CHEMLINE to search <strong>for</strong> chemical<br />
compounds (on-line data base).<br />
