ARMOUR OF GOD

In his letter to the church at Ephesus Paul points to her high responsibility, her special place in the plan of God. She has been called to victorious life in her risen Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, victorious life in the spiritual warfare against invisible and perilous powers of Satan, continuously opposing her on her way to perfection.

perfect. Under this helmet was hostility against God, raging
blasphemy; a helmet of mischief. David's friends wanted to protect
the King. With it was also a helmet of brass (1 Sam. 17 : 38), hard,
perfect. Brazen helmet against brazen helmet That is the way 'flesh
and blood' fights. But David saw this could not help him. He put off
this armour, handed the brazen helmet back and put on the armour of
God. 'Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, saith the Lord of
hosts' (Zech. 4 : 6). He took the helmet of salvation into this battle.
Goliath's brazen helmet, the helmet of disaster, appeared to be not
entirely closed. The front showed an opening, and Goliath in his
immense haughtiness paid no attention to it David looked for five
smooth stones from the brook. He put one of them in his sling and
then, with great force, he slung it through the unprotected spot right
into the giant's forehead. Goliath fell, deadly wounded. David's
stone forced itself into Goliath's Satanic way of thinking and brought
this train of thoughts to a standstill. His battle was not, first of all, a
physical battle against a giant more than eleven feet tall, but against
the blasphemy coming out of his mouth; it was a spiritual fight. If you
only see the outward appearance of things, you see David go as
God's skylark, without armour, in mere faith. But he was well
provided with an armour, a better one than Saul' s - it was the armour
of God. David's stone sinking into Goliath's head killed the Satanic
attack against God.
The helmet of salvation is far better than any other helmet in
the spiritual battle against the evil powers in the heavenlies. If you
understand the saving truths of the Word of God and accept what
this Word says about Jesus Christ, the Saviour and Redeemer, and if
you accept what this Word says about you, you have put on the
helmet of salvation and your thoughts are protected against the
attacks of Satan, who shall not' get an advantage of us; for we are not
ignorant of his devices' (2 Cor. 2 : 11).
In Matthew 4 we read how Jesus and Satan met in the wilderness.
It is a perilous engagement, a duel between the Prince of light
and the prince of darkness. What will the result be? It is nothing less
than to be or not to be; who shall come forth as victor in this battle?
Satan attacks first, he opens the offensive in this spiritual fight. Being
the strategist that he is, he knows that attack is the best defense. But
Jesus takes His sword and answers this attack. He takes the sword of
the Spirit, the Word of God and says: 'It is written!' This direct blow
is to the credit ofJesus. Satan is forced back, the Word of God has
gained the victory.
