enemy can be defeated by them. The devil cannot be defeated by the edge of a material sword, no, but the utterances of God defeat him. Which are the utterances of God concerning Satan? This: that he is a defeated enemy; this: that his head was bruised on Calvary by Jesus of Nazareth, who tread upon the serpent; this: that the keys of hell and of death have been taken away from him (Rev. 1 : 18); this: that he must bow down and surrender to the name of Jesus; this: that he has been conquered by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of the testimony of the children of God (Rev. 12 : 11); this: that his cause is a lost cause. Amen. Believers with full authority can defeat the enemy and compel him to flee. They have a right and a duty to do this, to bind the powers of darkness and send them back to the pit The child of God has read these truths in the Word of God and acts accordingly by faith. When he visits a child of God fallen into the hands of Satan and fallen ill, he opposes the powers which infiltrate the child of God in the power of God. He swings the sword of the Spirit and says: 'In the name of Jesus Christ we tear this prey away, Satan! This is Jesus' own! You have no right to possess this human being. Jesus bought him (her) with His blood! He bore all his (her) sicknesses on the cross, by His wounds he (she) is healed! Leave this dwelling place! We cast you out! We take this soul away from you, in the name of Jesus!' When you say this with authority, in the power of the Spirit and believing that what you say will come to pass, this power of sickness must leave the sick person; he has to obey. 'Have faith in God. For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say to this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith. Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them' (Mark 11 : 22-24). 'But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering' (James 1 : 6). There are all sorts of powers, princes and principalities which offer persistent resistance and there are other evil spirits, smaller ones, vexing demons, demons of worry, but swing the sword of the Spirit in faith till victory is sure. John says in his first epistle: 'For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil' (1 John 3 : 8). And Jesus said in the upper room: 'Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on Me, the works that I do shall he do also; 58
and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father' (John 14 : 12). These are sharp words, giving a glorious guarantee. With them we can go forward to battle. We have the twoedged sword in our hand. It is a command of our Lord Jesus. 0, there is still so much to be done. It is as if the powers of evil are multiplying and their influence is becoming greater. And what lack of knowledge there is concerning this spiritual battle! By his politics of blurring New Testament doctrine, the devil has succeeded in leading the people of God astray and paralysing them. How many people today are in the power of Satan! 0, body of Christ Arise! Child of God: Arise and stand on your feet! Christian: Put on the armour of God! To the arms! Take your place in the armies of God! Turn back to the authority in the Spirit, take action again, as Paul did, against the rulers of the darkness of this world! Use the sword of the Spirit the Word of God! This and this only will conquer the spiritual wickedness in high places. 'For the Word of God is quick, and powerful and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing assunder of soul and spirit and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart' (Heb. 4 : 12). Praying in the Spirit (Eph. 6 : 18) Most readers of this portion of Scripture on the armour of God stop reading in Ephesians 6 at verse 17. They close their Bible and think they know everything about these weapons. But they are mistaken; they forget about an extraordinary, valuable offensive weapon: praying in the Spirit 'Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit' (6 : 18). They think the sword of the Spirit is enough to penetrate the army camp of the enemy and to bring back the property of Jesus. But there is another very sharp weapon given to us by God, apart from the sword of the Spirit, the Word, against spiritual wickedness in high places. It is a totally spiritual warfare. The Lord has provided a weapon of a special nature, even more powerful and successful than the sword of the Spirit Every human fallibility is excluded and the fight is put in the hands of Him from whom all visible and invisible powers must be drawn. The weapon is: 'Praying in the Spirit'. 59
