3.52 EMBRACING PARTICIPATION IN DEVELOPMENT: Wisdom from the Field<br />

2.9 Daily time use analysis<br />

This is a fairly straightforward method. This analysis of a typical day for a<br />

participant is easy to understand and analyze. This method can be used in<br />

groups, though it is more effective when used by an individual as there can be<br />

specific information to focus the discussion on.<br />

This method is a good ice-breaker and helps in starting a discussion. Questions<br />

can be asked on the basis of the analysis carried out by the individual/group.<br />

Since the analysis is about how the person(s) spends a typical day, the first thing<br />

to be done is to ask the participant how they would like to divide the day. Some<br />

may divide it by the hour and some may simply divide it by morning, afternoon,<br />

evening and night. The participant(s) is asked to analyze how his/her time is<br />

spent during a typical day.<br />

Following is an example of daily time use analysis, carried out by a group of boys<br />

in Chilenje Compound:<br />

-morning group reports back for football practice<br />

1700 hrs -practice over<br />

-classes over for p.m. group<br />

1745 hrs -water vegetables and lawns<br />

-bath, change into clean clothes<br />

-watch TV, video shows<br />

-reading<br />

1900 hrs -supper<br />

-some play with girls at school<br />

-some play "pool-table", others drink beer – mosi (at bottlestores),<br />

drink kachchasu (local brew) in the Mapoloto area,<br />

2100-2200 hrs -some sleep with girls along paths<br />

-bed time
