Mere months after the Camaro bowed in ’67, the Z/28<br />
package joined the lineup, bringing a high-revving<br />
302-inch engine and corner-carving suspension. However,<br />
<strong>it</strong> wasn’t until ’68 that the Z/28 came into <strong>it</strong>s own<br />
as a full-fledged model w<strong>it</strong>h <strong>it</strong>s own exterior badging.<br />
Originally created to sneak in under the Sports Car<br />
Club of America’s displacement lim<strong>it</strong>s of 305 cubic<br />
inches for Trans Am racing, the fusion of a 283 crank<br />
and a 327 block resulted in the 302-cube <strong>com</strong>bination.<br />
The engine featured large-port heads, w<strong>it</strong>h 1.94 intake<br />
valves and 1.60 exhaust valves actuated by a solidroller<br />
camshaft, but was only rated at 290 horsepower.<br />
In real<strong>it</strong>y, <strong>it</strong> made as much as 350 horsepower. W<strong>it</strong>h<br />
that kind of power and an F41 Heavy Duty suspension<br />
to match, Mark Donahue led team Penske to an<br />
SCCA manufacturer’s championship in ’68. Desp<strong>it</strong>e<br />
<strong>it</strong>s road-racing bent, the Z/28 also cleaned up on the<br />
quarter-mile, w<strong>it</strong>h Stock Eliminator driver Dave Strickler<br />
bringing home the championship in his 11-second<br />
Grumpy Jenkins-prepped ’68.<br />
