A 300 Ma vegetational Pompeii: forest
reconstruction, palaeoecology <strong>and</strong>
palaeobiogeography – an Early Permian
peat­forming flora from Inner Mongolia

Plant communities of <strong>the</strong> geologic past can be
reconstructed with high fidelity only if <strong>the</strong>y were
preserved in place in an instant in time, which are
extremely rare but are essential <strong>to</strong> gain insights in<strong>to</strong>
paleoecology, paleobiogeography <strong>and</strong> paleoclimate. An
earliest Permian volcanic air‐fall tuff from Inner Mongolia,
China, preserved an in situ forest that grew on an
extensive peat deposit that exists <strong>to</strong>day as a mineable coal
seam. Our research has realized <strong>the</strong> first reconstruction
of an actual site of a peat‐forming swamp forest of
Permian age which represents also <strong>the</strong> first such
reconstruction for <strong>the</strong> late Paleozoic of East Asia. The
flora was dominated by Marattialean tree ferns, tree
lycopsids <strong>and</strong> Noeggerathiales, a generally rare group of
extinct spore‐bearing plants of uncertain systematic
position. This composition is both similar <strong>and</strong> distinctly
different from that recognized in floras of <strong>the</strong> same time
interval in Europe or North America. Plant remains
were quantitatively recorded in three plots of <strong>to</strong>ge<strong>the</strong>r
more than 1000 m 2 . The plots show forest
heterogeneity including <strong>the</strong> first site ever recorded that
was dominated by Noeggerathiales.
A case study on benefit sharing for

China is one of <strong>the</strong> contracting Parties <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Convention
on Biological Diversity <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> future contracting Party
<strong>to</strong> Nagoya Pro<strong>to</strong>col. China is currently developing <strong>the</strong>
legislative framework for access <strong>and</strong> benefit sharing
activities. We conducted a participa<strong>to</strong>ry farmer survey
of <strong>the</strong> conditions of Prior Informed Consent (PIC) <strong>and</strong>
Mutually Agreed Terms (MAT) in Xiangxi Tujia <strong>and</strong>
Miao Au<strong>to</strong>nomous Prefecture, Hunan, China, assessing
how benefits gained by <strong>the</strong> development of Xiangxi pig
are shared, <strong>and</strong> what <strong>the</strong> awareness <strong>and</strong> attitude <strong>to</strong>
access <strong>and</strong> benefit‐sharing is. The study showed that: (1)
when Xiangxi black pig resources in local communities
are developed <strong>and</strong> utilized, PIC are communicated orally.
91.2% of <strong>the</strong> households were not informed in writing.
Certification <strong>and</strong> registration system of genetic resource
property rights has not been established; (2) mutually
agreed terms of black pig was achieved by converting
oral agreements <strong>to</strong> written agreements; (3) <strong>the</strong> farmers
make profits by <strong>the</strong> weight increase of pigs <strong>and</strong> at a
higher price than <strong>the</strong> normal market; (4) farmers
resource views remain in <strong>the</strong> stage of exchangeof
money for resources, only <strong>the</strong> use value of <strong>the</strong> goods
