Abstract for Posters <strong>and</strong> Exhibition A brief introduction of Dongzhaigang Longterm Research Station for Mangrove Wetl<strong>and</strong> Ecosystem in Hainan Isl<strong>and</strong> of China Baowen LIAO Dongzhaigang Long‐term Research Station for Mangrove Wetl<strong>and</strong> Ecosystem, Hainan, China. Email: mangro@pub.guangzhou.gd.cn Overview: Dongzhaigang Long‐term Research Station for Mangrove Wetl<strong>and</strong> Ecosystem on Hainan Isl<strong>and</strong>, established in Hainan Dongzhaigang National Nature Reserve, only 30 kilometers from Haikou, with 3300 hectares of mangrove wetl<strong>and</strong>s. The station was established by <strong>the</strong> Research Institute of Tropical Forestry, <strong>the</strong> Chinese Academy of Forestry (technical supporting unit), after completing <strong>the</strong> national ‘Eighth Five‐Year’ (starting in 1991) <strong>and</strong> ‘Ninth Five‐Year’ mangrove scientific <strong>and</strong> technological research project, <strong>and</strong> upgraded <strong>to</strong> a State Forestry Administration ecological research station in 2004. The mangrove wetl<strong>and</strong> of this station is <strong>the</strong> only one that is <strong>the</strong> most typical <strong>and</strong> primitive of tropical natural mangrove wetl<strong>and</strong>s ecosystems in China, <strong>and</strong> it has <strong>the</strong> highest community, species <strong>and</strong> habitat diversity. There are mangrove plants including 17 families with 35 species, associated plants 18 family 33 species, birds 159 species, fish 57 species, benthos 92 species, which represent <strong>the</strong> flora <strong>and</strong> fauna at <strong>the</strong> transitional zone from tropical <strong>to</strong> subtropical wetl<strong>and</strong>s. And <strong>the</strong> wetl<strong>and</strong> has been included in <strong>the</strong> ‘Ramsar’ International Importance Wetl<strong>and</strong>s List, <strong>and</strong> is an ideal place of mangrove ecosystem positioning <strong>and</strong> long‐term research. Objectives: A mangrove comprehensive study platform will gradually be built with advanced equipment <strong>and</strong> high research level, with sharing as well as openness. The station will focus on <strong>the</strong> mangrove ecosystem structure <strong>and</strong> functional changes in law <strong>and</strong> res<strong>to</strong>ration of ecology research, which can provide <strong>the</strong>oretical guidance <strong>and</strong> technical support for building an ecological security system of <strong>the</strong> coastal mangroves in China. The main directions: ◆Ecosystem structure <strong>and</strong> functional changes of mangrove wetl<strong>and</strong>s ◆Res<strong>to</strong>ration ecology of mangrove wetl<strong>and</strong>s ◆Biodiversity of mangrove wetl<strong>and</strong>s ◆Impact <strong>and</strong> response of mangrove wetl<strong>and</strong>s ecosystem <strong>to</strong> global climate change ◆Complex ecosystem establishment of fisheries <strong>and</strong> mangrove forests <strong>and</strong> sustainable management ◆Security system <strong>the</strong>ory <strong>and</strong> methods of mangrove ecosystems for windbreaks ◆Disaster prevention <strong>and</strong> effective mitigation of mangroves Infrastructure: In 2004, <strong>the</strong> State Forestry Administration has invested more than 3.5 million yuan in equipment installation <strong>and</strong> infrastructure transformation for <strong>the</strong> station in 2004. Currently <strong>the</strong> station has built a tidal simulation labora<strong>to</strong>ry, a chemical analysis labora<strong>to</strong>ry, 16 long‐term fixed plots, 4 tidal wave au<strong>to</strong>matic observation systems, a bird observa<strong>to</strong>ry, 2 wea<strong>the</strong>r stations, an experimental nursery <strong>and</strong> a number of o<strong>the</strong>r related equipment. In short, <strong>the</strong> research station will eventually be established one opening four‐in‐one integrated technology platform with moni<strong>to</strong>ring, research, demonstration <strong>and</strong> popular science education.
