The year <strong>of</strong> 1894 is remembered all up and down <strong>the</strong> Columbia as<br />

<strong>the</strong> year <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> big flood. We saw our trees, alfalfa and every growing<br />

thing swept away, even <strong>the</strong> earth being taken along. We saved<br />

<strong>the</strong> shack <strong>by</strong> anchoring it to <strong>the</strong> foundation.<br />

The government allowed us to select ano<strong>the</strong>r location and we chose<br />

what is now Barrett Island.<br />

W"hell we came to Kalama <strong>the</strong>re was no dock at all. 'We just landed<br />

on <strong>the</strong> bank. In <strong>the</strong> high water <strong>of</strong> 1894 <strong>the</strong> water came all over<br />

,Main street so deep that <strong>the</strong> boat Iralda came right up <strong>the</strong> street.<br />

The spring <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> big flood, in 1894, we had a twenty ton stack <strong>of</strong><br />

hay which washed a'way, crossed <strong>the</strong> river, and a man tied it up. Rats<br />

gnawed <strong>the</strong> rope and <strong>the</strong> hay drifted down to my fa<strong>the</strong>r's ranch and<br />

settled right <strong>by</strong> his corrals. "Vater came up in our house and we left.<br />

It rose five feet in <strong>the</strong> house. ~Iy bro<strong>the</strong>rs wouldn't leave <strong>the</strong>ir house.<br />

They kept <strong>the</strong> row-boat fastened to <strong>the</strong> door.<br />

During <strong>the</strong> disastrous flood in <strong>the</strong> valley in 1894, this log house<br />

floated down <strong>the</strong> river a short distance. After <strong>the</strong> water had subsided,<br />

it was brought back in sections and rebuilt on higher ground.<br />

During <strong>the</strong> high water <strong>of</strong> 1894, all <strong>of</strong> South Kelso was under water,<br />

<strong>the</strong> water was 15 feet deep on Cedar street. People lived in <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

upstairs rooms and went back and forth <strong>by</strong> boat. All <strong>of</strong> what is noW<br />

Longview was under water and boats could go anywhere <strong>the</strong>re.<br />
