<strong>Told</strong> <strong>by</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Pioneers</strong><br />

teacher here. Our fuel supply failed, so <strong>the</strong> school was moved to my<br />

fa<strong>the</strong>r's house <strong>the</strong> last three weeks <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> term.<br />

A little frame school house was built in 1880 where <strong>the</strong> Pullman<br />

high school now stands. There were no desks, only benches. "\Ve<br />

made snow forts in winter and had snow battles. One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> entertainments<br />

we had in those days was <strong>the</strong> old spelling bee. It was held<br />

in <strong>the</strong> evenings. I remember "spelling down" <strong>the</strong> whole goa<strong>the</strong>ring,<br />

including a Harvard graduate.<br />

"'lYe had a Sunday school, which was held in our home, but we had<br />

no church services excepting when <strong>the</strong> circuit rider came through. Our<br />

first mail came to Colfax bv wav <strong>of</strong> Almota and ~loscow. Our first<br />

Christmas tree was in <strong>the</strong> little frame school house in 1881. School<br />

started J anuary ~, and revival services were conducted in <strong>the</strong> school<br />

house for three weeks. Then <strong>the</strong> ~fethodist church was organized <strong>by</strong><br />

Rev. Brvan.<br />

In 1879 we had our first Fourth <strong>of</strong> July celebration in a gro\·e. In<br />

1881 <strong>the</strong> first store building in Pullman was finished and <strong>the</strong> Fourth<br />

<strong>of</strong> July dance was given <strong>the</strong>re.<br />

The new church was built in 1882 and a big Christmas tree was set<br />

up.<br />

My bro<strong>the</strong>r and I roamed <strong>the</strong>se hills nearly sixty years ago-happy<br />

and contented. If we were missing life, we didn't realize it. .Many<br />

changes have now taken place. Now an automobile skims along over<br />

paved roads to Spokane in less than two hours. It took my fa<strong>the</strong>r<br />

three days to drive <strong>the</strong>re when he took me up <strong>the</strong>re to attend school.<br />

Theatrical companies went through here in <strong>the</strong>ir own conveyances,<br />

!'>topping <strong>of</strong>f in <strong>the</strong>se little bunch grass towns for" one-night stands."<br />

Nothing very eventful happened. The college was established here.<br />

It is now a malTelous Rchool and keeps Pullman going where o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

towns are slipping.<br />

birthplace for sixty-one years, which is my age at this time. All <strong>of</strong><br />

we children with one exception were born in this same eounty and<br />
