<strong>Told</strong> <strong>by</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Pioneers</strong><br />
which was invested in notes and second mortgages. During- <strong>the</strong> panic<br />
<strong>of</strong> 1893 <strong>the</strong>se mortgages were foreclosed <strong>by</strong> <strong>the</strong> first mortgage holders,<br />
and most <strong>of</strong> my fortune was wiped out.<br />
-When <strong>the</strong> boat which I boarded at Portland reached Vancouver,<br />
,Vashington, two companies <strong>of</strong> soldiers were taken aboard. These<br />
soldiers came to Lewiston, <strong>the</strong>n marched to near where Grangeville,<br />
Idaho, is now located. A short time later, <strong>the</strong>se soldiers -were amhushed<br />
<strong>by</strong> <strong>the</strong> Indians near Whitebird, Idaho, and all <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m, except<br />
one, were killed. This soldier's horse was killed and fell on him. The<br />
Indians thought he was dead, and left.<br />
At <strong>the</strong> time I arrived in ,Vhitman County, <strong>the</strong> people lived in or<br />
near go,-ernment forts, as <strong>the</strong> Indians were hostile in <strong>the</strong>se times. The<br />
forts were built <strong>of</strong> logs which stood close toge<strong>the</strong>r on end tweln feet<br />
above <strong>the</strong> ground. Most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ground on which Pullman is now located<br />
was a sheep corral, enclosing as many as 5,000 at one time. The<br />
town <strong>of</strong> Moscow had a small store o,,-ned <strong>by</strong> A. A. Lew Allen, and<br />
across <strong>the</strong> street waR a blacksmith shop owned <strong>by</strong> Benjamin. 'rheEc<br />
were all <strong>the</strong> buildings <strong>the</strong>re were in ~loscow. A government fort was<br />
situated near this settlement.<br />
I have always been active politically, and spent considerable <strong>of</strong> my<br />
money and time in working to get <strong>the</strong> <strong>Washington</strong> <strong>State</strong> College located<br />
at Pullman.<br />
,Vhen Ferry County was opened <strong>by</strong> <strong>the</strong> government to white settlers<br />
for mining in 1898, I moved to Kellar, Ferry County, where I assisted<br />
in staking out <strong>the</strong> township and opened a small tent store. Tents<br />
were <strong>the</strong> only shelter which <strong>the</strong> people had. They were looking for<br />
mining claims, and this work took <strong>the</strong>m into <strong>the</strong> hills and so <strong>the</strong>y were<br />
unable to make a permanent home, with <strong>the</strong> exception <strong>of</strong> those who 1:
